I worked at Wayne State full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good facilities, union, nice campus and good facilities

    Cons

Overly bureaucratic, union, lack of funding for conference travel & minor research costs. Too much power in administrative positions and too little in the hands of the faculty as a whole, or as a department.

    Advice to Management

Cut some administration and focus more on what matters. Don't expect all faculty in all departments to get outside research funding -- it's a pipe dream, not practical in many fields, and not a reasonable expectation.

    Pros

Easy work. Can finish the work in given time

    Cons

Employment Ethics. They change rules and don't care about already employed people.

I worked at Wayne State part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible hours and a chance to brush up on people skills. Learned a lot about the university, as well as learning how to deal with crowds of people

    Cons

Not too much room for growth and pay was a little less than to be desired.
Management also changes fairly frequently so new policies and rules can be added at the drop of a hat.

I have been working at Wayne State as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

My boss is great. I was able to take time off when need be and I had a flexible schedule as a temp.

    Cons

I didn't like how inactive I felt. It's not my passion so I cannot say I enjoy sitting at a desk all day doing paper work and assisting students.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work. Advice would go above him and I would say let them hire more staff!

    Pros

Great benefit (Medical and Tuition). My wife got a degree at half cost.

    Cons

Problematic Midtown Detroit Area. I am always afraid to walk out during the night by myself.

    Advice to Management

Improve the security around Midtown area. But it had been a lot enhanced across the past 5 years.

I have been working at Wayne State full-time

    Pros

Most positions allow flexible hours. Wayne State provides a health insurance program including dental and eye insurance. Tuition coverage is guaranteed by the university for a minimum 1.5 years if enrolled as a PhD student.

    Cons

Work-life balance can be difficult. No defined vacation time. Workload is PI dependent. Lack of departmental funding can limit the research opportunity.

    Advice to Management

Unnecessary administration positions should be reduced and money allocated to graduate programs and their respective departments in order to support students and respective research opportunity.

I worked at Wayne State full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Calm environment, most of the people are friendly

    Cons

No time off for first 6 months, accrue points and get penalized for approved sick time

    Advice to Management

Be more compassionate. I was only at this job 5 months and I became ill in March of this year and ended up being off work for being in emergency and goin to doctors and dental appointments. I spoke with my supervisor, she approved the time off and acted as if everything was fine. The week I came back from my doctors appointments they fired me. No sympathy no compassion and I honestly believe they did not care that I was sick. After being terminated I tried to call around and see what i could do nobody wanted to try to help me. The HR reps for college of nursing never returned my calls and I worked in the same office as them! Not only did wayne state fire me, now I am left without health insurance unable to go to doctors appointments and still don't know what's causing my illness. I never expected wayne state university to treat anyone this way.
