Certain times of the year require long work days and minimal days off

    Advice to Management

Manage staff hours making sure they aren't over working themselves.

    Pros

Wente Family Estates is family owned and encompasses many facets of the wine industry; including wine growing, wine making, sales both DTC through tasting rooms and wholesale. They have a thriving hospitality side of the business with two restaurants, event center, and golf course.

    Cons

Management structure is very vertical and doesn't communicate beyond the next level down. Policies and decision making are kept with-in a small senior management circle. Employees do not feel they have a voice and are cautious about expressing their opinions if not in agreement with management. In an effort to grow quickly, the company's goals often outpace the number of employees they need to succeed well. Loyal hard working employees are often not mentored and replaced by fresh new faces willing to work for less.

    Advice to Management

Be more transparent and communicate with everyone across all departments. Make sure everyone on your team feels as if their voice counts. Listen, learn and respect one another. Encourage personal contributions and partner with everyone throughout the company. Be in tune with what the organization looks like from the bottom up.

    Decent discounts for special events
    Fun work environment
    Beautiful place to work
Work with interesting mix of people

    Cons

    Pay is mediocre
Somewhat hard to move up within the company
    High turnover rate of employees
    Hours dont stay consistent
    Too many managers

    Advice to Management

Wente needs to reward hard working/dedicated employees and phase out employees who are lazy/don't do their job accordingly

I worked at Wente Vineyards part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great place to work! The environment is beautiful and the management staff supports the service staff with lots of ongoing training. Great food and wine make this a very fun place to work. The guests that visit the restaurant are usually happy to be there and a pleasure to wait on. Tips are often above average and the owners are a pleasure to work for.

    Cons

Late night and weekend work are where the best shifts can be found. But, that's commonplace with the restaurant industry.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work!

I worked at Wente Vineyards part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The company sets each employee to the path of success by imposing a positive work environment. There was a great deal of teamwork amongst employees and I learned a lot from each individual. The management team was always helpful.

    Cons

The kitchen will always be a stressful environment, but I consider this to be tame.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you're already doing.

I worked at Wente Vineyards part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I worked during the summer as a catering server- the shifts were always different depending on what kind of party you were serving but it kept things interesting and being in a young group made it more enjoyable.

    Cons

Management was very understandable if things ever came up as long as you found someone to cover you and it seemed there were always people willing to take shifts. The hot days outside in a white button-up with a vest and tie were not my favorite.

I worked at Wente Vineyards part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I learned a lot. For example, dealing with wealthy people, as well as being super professional and organized when under stress from coworkers and customers. People have high standards when they come in, so be aware of meeting those needs/wants. You do get discounts on merchandise, golfing, food, wine, etc. which is nice.

    Cons

Customers have high standards, to the point that if they don't get their way they act like a child (since usually they can buy their wants exactly as they want). Coworkers usually add to the stress instead of trying to relieve the pressure. Everyone sucks up to each other to get what they want, yet talk about each other behind their backs.

    Advice to Management

Hire more people! Everyone is stretched extremely thin. Also, be more involved in the actual business. The Wente family should realize they need to invest more money into the restaurant if they want it to stay afloat. Meanwhile, the GM should be involved on the floor more so it doesn't mess everyone's flow. Managers need to have the courage to tell the GM what needs to be changed and not be sucking up.

    Pros

Terrific place to work. Definitely recommend it. Excellent team work and support from upper management. The owners really seem to care about their employees.

    Cons

Salaries could be a little bit higher. Moving up within the company can be difficult at times. No other big complaints really.

    Pros

Fun place to work, lots of wine tasting (!). Good place to learn the restaurant business. The clientele that come into the restaurant are generally happy to be there and it's an overall great place to work.

    Cons

Sometimes the hours in the restaurant business can be kind of tough. However, this is indicative of the overall industry as a whole, rather than the restaurant, itself. The late hours and weekends can be pretty tough.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work. Maybe bring back some of the "perks" that used to accompany this job - ballgames, sporting events, etc.
