I worked at Wesley Healthcare full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great experiences and coworkers. Many areas available to work at with many different shifts.

    Cons

Heavy patient load and high turnover rate. Hospital has history for poor staffing resulting in patient deaths in 1999 and 2004. There may be others but Wesley wanted records sealed as part of settlement and the family refused. Low pay for the top revenue grossing HCA hospital. Administration does not listen to staff.

    Advice to Management

Reward your staff with better pay and quit making excuses. You are the top revenue generator for HCA per Becker Hospital Review and Center for Medicaid Services. Cutting pay by reconfiguring shift and weekend differential for experienced nurses made me leave.

    Cons

Nurses and doctors can be rude. Communication is terrible in some units.

    Advice to Management

    Communication needs to be improved.

I have been working at Wesley Healthcare full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Competitive pay and wonderful people to work with. Great benefits and such a great facility. Room for advancement and education opportunities.

    Cons

Sometimes hours are cut when census is low, which sucks, but there is usually opportunities to float to other units if you're up for it.

I worked at Wesley Healthcare full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    laid-back and fun culture
    shared governance model
Engaged and visible leadership at all levels

    Cons

    Low pay
    Not so great staffing
Not so consistent treatment to every department

    Advice to Management

I truly miss working at this hospital because most days I truly felt like I made a difference for my patients and I was able to practice to my full scope of practice as a nurse.

Staffing however, was atrocious most days. Management should really revise how departments earn CTEs to create more staff positions and also revise nurse staffing schemes to reflect the increasing acuity of patients that are seen.

As a nurse who likes to know the "why" of everything happening, the shared governance model I had the honor of participating in was exceptional and extremely valuable for me as I further my career. I had to leave the company due to moving out of state, but I feel like if I stayed, the hospital would have further nurtured my professional growth and promoted me.

I have been working at Wesley Healthcare (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The other people (nurses, doctors, RT, CNAs) that I work with- teamwork has never really been a problem. My coworkers make the job easier and less stressful, even when we are busy. They are currently playing with the idea of self-scheduling, which would be very nice.

    Cons

Opportunity for growth is pretty stunted- it's hard to transfer in and out of different units if you don't know someone. Pay raises used to be unheard of until employee engagement surveys started plummeting and turn over was pretty high- now each year you can bet on a "nice" 1-2% raise, no bonuses and yearly increasing cost of benefits. Base pay is WELL BELOW the national average, and that is in the ENTIRE city of Wichita.

Also, management turnover is pretty high. In the two and half years I've worked here, we have lost 3 unit managers, an ACNO and the CEO of my campus and the head CEO of the main campus.

    Advice to Management

You constantly strive to decrease turnover but you don't offer incentives for us to stay. RN's in this city seem to make less than in any other city in the whole state of Kansas. Upper management and administration see yearly bonuses and pay increases often while us peons on the bottom see barely anything. Be more engaged with your nurses; stop screaming at us about HCAP scores and actually stop to see if that score is really reflecting the true bedside manner of your workers.
