    Pros

Wonderful benefits package, time off, and breaks during the school year.

    Cons

Very little pay for the hazards of the job, too much negativity, incessant gossiping by teachers and staff. Very little real leadership from the teachers.

    Advice to Management

Get a handle on the gossip and back stabbing and reprimand the teachers for allowing it to continue in their classrooms.

I have been working at West Des Moines Community Schools full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Great co-workers, good benefits.

    Cons

No opportunity for professional growth. There is no career--just jobs. Budget constraints for FY2015 and FY2016 will make workloads heavy hamper morale.

    Advice to Management

The professional development opportunities are pointless if the experience and learning don't lead to promotions or additional responsibility.

I worked at West Des Moines Community Schools (More than 3 years)

    Pros

High quality of teachers, newer technology, most students motivated to learn.

    Cons

Public school district...hands tied by bureaucracy sometimes...not able to always get rid of under-performing teachers. Sometimes it is "who you know" rather than "what you know".

I worked at West Des Moines Community Schools (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I loved my coworkers and the children. They also paid very well and you've got to love state retirement benefits.

    Cons

Out of touch management and spoiled parents. Some very early morning hours and outdated policies.

    Advice to Management

Start listening to your employees more and telling spoiled parents to teach their kids how to function on a basic level

    Cons

There are few opportunities for advancement within the district.

I have been working at West Des Moines Community Schools part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

They offer wonderful benefits, co workers are amazing! Buses are newer and kept in good shape for the most part. Feels like a family. Training is tip top!

    Cons

If you are wanting a job with overtime or consistency this may not be for you. Day to day hrs can change, definitely not 40 hrs a week, field trips can be an additional source of income but they are by no means something you can count on.

    Advice to Management

Kind of a "clique-y" environment, some workers seem to get perks and more trips. Awarding employees who seldom miss work/call in with more trips would be nice rather then giving trips to those who miss quite a bit.

    Pros

Most people are very energized about their jobs and want to do their best in educating students. This is a high achieving School District.

    Cons

The benefits are good but the salary levels are lower than in the private sector. Have to decide cost benefits of that looking at the whole package.

    Advice to Management

Need to evaluate all employees and get rid of non- performing staff.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at West Des Moines Community Schools full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Positive educational community, opportunities for professional development with compensation, embraces teacher leadership programming, suburb of a top ten metro area, quality materials and facilities

    Cons

I can't think of anything I would consider a con within the district. Wish it was more diversified, but diversity is growing quickly, and the district is conducting cutting edge equity research to allow for the best learning environment for all students--bravo WDMCS!

    Advice to Management

I love working and living in West Des Moines
