    Pros

Easy commute if you live in the Santa Cruz Area.
Good Associate discounts if you enjoy boating.
There are some good and talented people at this company.
Money is decent for a non-Silicon Valley worksite.

    Cons

IT department is seriously understaffed, overworked and ill-managed.
CIO runs department with no checks and balances. Nepotism and favoring cronies rampant.
No respect for work/life balance. IT employees are seen as failing in their jobs if they dare to believe they can leave work at a reasonable time, have weekends free or expect not to be asked to do work during their vacations.
With such close proximity to Silicon Valley it's hard to get the top applicants here.

    Advice to Management

HR needs to seriously look at who is being hired and why.
Respect the QWL surveys. If you're going to the effort to do these every year then pay some attention to fixing what is wrong.
Provide some oversight to the CIO. Money is being wasted on consulting and dead end projects. The board needs to be accountable, informed and involved.
Invest money in the right place. Slimming down staff and expecting them to carry the same workload, and more, isn't working.

I worked at West Marine part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The team was awesome management could use some guidance. Great discount hours of work aren't bad. I always worked full time hours as part time.

    Cons

Lots of blind leading blind, no room for growth, cashier is the worst job they make you handle way more than you can. No one person can talk on the phone help a customer and answer radio questions.

    Advice to Management

Start reviewing the people that are great and need to be advanced and start looking to where you need to improve the job.

    Pros

It was a very nice environment. The people helped me learn about boating and fishing quickly.

    Cons

I got fired after a week because I told my manager that I wouldn't be able to come in much during the school week for the next 2 weeks because I had to make up 10 hours after school to pass one of my classes. My manager said that the team really needed two cashiers and said he would have to take me off the roster. I found this ridiculous because the Sales Associates know how to use the cash register. During the weekdays, we never enough people for 2 cashiers anyway. However, the one Saturday that I worked, I was the only cashier. Weekends are the busy days and it had been raining for weeks and it was sunny on Saturday so we were packed. I was the only cashier.

    Advice to Management

My manager didn't even know that I had to have working papers because I'm 17, nor did he ask me for them. Educate people before you give them responsibility.

    Pros

Good benefits, especially if you own a boat. Advancement opportunities.

    Cons

Salaries are not competitive. If you choose to work in the SF Bay Area rather than the ocean side of the mountains you could gain $30-$40 for the same job.
