I have been working at West Virginia Division of Corrections full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Team based atmosphere
    Good benefits
Lots of opportunities to rank up due to turnover

    Cons

    Lowest pay in the country
    life-threatening atmosphere
Constant meaningless changes to policy and training
    high turnover

    Advice to Management

More work on the legislature to get full time employees a raise and off social assistance.

I worked at West Virginia Division of Corrections (Less than a year)

    Pros

The benefits are good but the rates are going up. Vacation and sick leave is easy to accrue. Lots of holidays off.

    Cons

Poor management. Good ole boy network. If you like to be back stabbed this is the place for you.

    Advice to Management

The Cabinet Secretary needs to fire top management in Corrections. They treat their employees badly. Sexual harassment is daily. Acting Commissioner is a joke. Never understood why they put uneducated people in top positions.

I have been working at West Virginia Division of Corrections full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good people to work with. Co-workers are family. Bonds that will never be broken. Each day brings different situations.

    Cons

Extremely low pay for such a high stress job. Dealing every day with convicted felons that only want to make your day horrendous for very little pay. Executive staff oblivious to perils of line staff.

    Advice to Management

Understand what line staff actually have to deal with rather than Monday morning quarterback every little decision made that had to be made instantly. Support staff rather than degrade them and battle them with constant rule changes.

    Pros

The Staff here work together as a Team Player and the training is very good.

    Cons

You need to have a good head on your shoulders and be on guard working with the Inmates.

    Advice to Management

Have to have good communication skills and a hard worker.

    Pros

There are some awesome people that work here. Some not so much. The good does outweigh the bad when discussing other staff members. Benefits are decent but there's always a threat they're going to raise premiums.

    Cons

You willingly go to prison for the lowest paid corrections system in the country. Dela with scummy inmates but not all are bad. Most are pains in the backside. Administration is always changing stuff and enjoy playing favorites. If you whine and cry enough you get what you want, if not, they dump on you because you won't complain.

    Advice to Management

Get raises for everyone. Be firm, fair, and consistent with staff the way they preach dealing with inmates.

I have been working at West Virginia Division of Corrections full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Easy to get hired.
    Great training programs.
    Lot of overtime.

    Cons

The pay is not nearly enough considering how dangerous the job is.
Promotions are based off of the "buddy system".......if you are one of their buddies, they will feed you the interview questions the day before the interview.

    Pros

Benifits, job stability and good co workers

    Cons

The state salary sucks! There is alot of turn over and most of the turn over goes back to the salary offered.

    Advice to Management

If you want to have better retention then you need to increase the salary.

I have been working at West Virginia Division of Corrections full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

I have a hard time thinking of anything besides its always going to be there.

    Cons

The state workers need paid better with better insurance. It's not hardly worth getting up everyday to go yo work there when you know you can make most as much basically anywhere.
