I have been working at Western Carolina University part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Beautiful campus, relaxing people, student-engagement drives faculty and staff

    Cons

Developing campus facilities means noisy construction at all times, systemic lack of administrative protocol and business processes

    Advice to Management

Review temporary employees' contributions/value and be proactive in offering full-time positions to retain talented employees.

I have been working at Western Carolina University part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

They employee a decent amount of students. Most departments will work with you as a student to schedule you around your classes.

    Cons

The buddy culture here means that if you dont go to the right church, or right social club, you have no chance of getting a full time position. Drama is high for a low pay job. I would only recommend if you never want to leave the area. IT is the worst for the buddy culture though. Also if you report anything to HR such as harassment or unfair practices, they will do nothing except send it back to your boss, dealt with that first hand.

    Advice to Management

Stop letting certain managers only hire their unqualified friends, and have more over sight over managers and their hiring practices. Hire qualified people or you will not keep up with issues. Also take HR issues seriously, reported sexual harassment and it was sent back to same manager who never handled it before.

I have been working at Western Carolina University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Beautiful area, great colleagues, good students, lots of opportunity to improve the program, solid faculty support and professional development opportunity

    Cons

Pay is ok but the lack of collective bargaining leaves salaries stagnant. In addition, state benefits are VERY expensive and paltry. This shortfall is not made up for in other compensation.

    Advice to Management

On a system level, until salary trajectory can be charted and the benefits become adequate, the brain drain will continue.

    Pros

Supportive environment with wonderful staff, faculty, students and administration. Breathtaking scenic campus and area.

    Cons

Upward mobility limited. Depending on the department, outside hires can be preferred. In some cases cliques exist, but nothing too out of ordinary. Self-sacrificial workoholoc atmosphere abounds. No extra money to be had for working weekends / late nights.

    Advice to Management

Continue to have ombudsmen style role to break up old conflicts. Find ways to monitarily reward even middle-tier excellence.

I have been working at Western Carolina University part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Amazing experience with great staff to work with! Fellow student workers are helpful and very team based, and full time members are not only there to work with you but also help you in your career goals as well.

    Cons

None that I can see currently, it is a student job, so pay will not be high. Also hours are at a premium some days due to scheduling. However this is not the fault of staff, just the situation of what it is.

    Advice to Management

Keep pushing for more certifications and abilities to advance for students as well as keeping the door open for new talent.

    Pros

Research focused professors make for an exciting journey to new areas of your interested field.

    Cons

Isolation in the mountains may be a downside if you prefer a mall within a 1 hour radius.

    Advice to Management

    None. Great place to work.

I worked at Western Carolina University (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The benefits and the really good people that I worked with.

    Cons

I thought all of the recycling and cleaning of two of the biggest floors in the building was way to hard on me.

    Advice to Management

Just because an employee can do a job very efficiently, should not be a reason to add more work on that employee.
