    Cons

The commute is pretty good considering it is in the middle of the bay area but not the the newest build.

    Pros

Big company doing good in terms of stocks and growth. Good to have this company on your resume. Good medical and dental benefits.

    Cons

As the tile says, Upper management does not have any knowledge of how to run a software company. They are making new processes and all going in a circle without any improvement in employees satisfaction. Everyone wants to take charge and drive without any knowledge of what to do.

    Advice to Management

Spin out the software division underneath from hardware and make it a separate company who would work independently. Otherwise you won't get top talents if you continue to stay in Silicon Valley and have the hardware folks decide how to satisfy software talents.

    Pros

Western Digital is known as a big and stable company with good financial results. Good salary.

    Cons

Traditionally Western Digital, Inc. makes money on HDDs. Currently there is very strong completion on the data storage market between HDDs and solid-state drives. During the last year HDD’s market shrank by about 15%.

I worked at Western Digital full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Very simple performance expectations, and great benefits.

    Cons

Unrealistic sales expectations, most top earners are good at gaming the system only not generating revenue. Simple performance expectations are in place, but no changes by the company to facilitate this growth.

    Advice to Management

Slim down the MGMT ranks, and beef up your foot soldiers. Beating the same dead horse will not increase revenues. If you want to play in the enterprise space, design faster drives that compete with the products that today's administrators need to maintain their service levels. A drive that is 1/2 the speed of what is needed will never work no matter how low you discount the price.

    Pros

    - Excellent brand (market leader in storage)
    - Strong leadership (new SVP brought in with proven track record in delivering software for cutting edge consumer products)
    - Current leadership values open communication and transparency, people are free to question vision, direction and strategy
    - Great people
    - An opportunity for strong performers to make a big impact (are you currently a little fish in a big pond?)
    - Flexible working environment
    - Competitive compensation

    Cons

Company is going through a fair amount of change – most people, in general, don’t like change

    Advice to Management

Evaluate and streamline some of the internal business processes for faster execution

    Pros

Software Professionals: You are in Silicon valley and have hundreds of great career options .
Hundreds of places that will value you, respect you, pay you well and grow your career well. So avoid this sinkhole.

    Cons

Check the Mountain View location - Content Solutions specific reviews on this site. They are pretty eloquent about the bad situation.
Check with employees and ex employees and also check the track records of the senior leaders. They all will speak volumes about the problems.
As usual the current leadership will brush it off as "disgruntled people resistant to change". But when a majority of accomplished professionals say the same thing it means something.

    Advice to Management

None as leadership here is incapable of listening.

I have been working at Western Digital full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Generally used to be a good software group and was growing but had some problems to go to next level.
Had some very talented engineers and ideas.
New mgmt. was hired to fix the problems.

    Cons

    - New mgmt. is inexperienced and a total disaster and has made the work environment hostile, toxic and ultimately a complete failure.
    - Large layoffs are a norm. One just happened last Friday
    - it is a one man show who is supposed to lead the engineering organization but pretty much runs product, marketing and even HR. The person has been given keys to the kingdom and it is very clear that he is neither qualified nor has the maturity to run large size organizations.
    - a lot of key positions are filled with new people who are from outside and buddies and neither have the track records nor experience to full fill the roles. It is solely based on buddy system.
    - snap judgements are made about employees by new mgmt. based on no substance technically.
    - questioning any decision means you get on layoff list unless you are in the inner buddy circle.
    - Mandatory 7 day work weeks are put in because releases were poorly planned , managed and doomed for failure to begin with.
    - layoffs are planned in advanced but Employees are intimidated to work at the Mountain View location mandatory 7 days a week and then laid off. Very unethical. Cannot believe this happens in USA.

    Advice to Management

For C level of this company : The My Cloud solution software that was built by this group has a good technical base and can be revved up. The new mgmt. has made matters worse so fire them and start again. Still can be done if the right leadership which has real vision and proven execution background is hired. Get senior leaders with proven track records that also motivate people and who actually have the technical depth and substance. Do not fall for the hollow talk and bravado which clearly happened when the new mgmt was hired. Learn from your mistakes.

I have a lot to say, but highly recommend connecting with ex-employees first before making up your mind!

    Advice to Management
