I have been working at Western Michigan University full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Being higher education, there's a feeling of a large yet personal and local community. Most IT responsibilities aren't as "critical" as they are in the private sector. It's far more relaxed. Health and other benefits (can take classes for free) are very generous.

    Cons

Many (most?) IT decisions are driven by community and resisted by influential faculty and staff making rapid growth and change difficult and frustrating. Financial compensation is minimal to below average. Many employees have been employed for decades making advancement a challenge.

    Advice to Management

I feel for most managers. They want to make positive changes but are met with resistance by those who may not even be directly involved or affected. I don't think I could make recommendations to a highly politicized environment when I have a challenge understanding all the politics myself.
