I worked at Western Refining full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good pay and benefit package. Friendly and professional environment. Chances for advancement and transfers to different departments. Modern facilities with covered, secure parking.

    Cons

Long hours and high pressure job. Mandatory weekend work and holiday schedule. No extra pay if you have to cover a coworkers shift.

    Advice to Management

Evaluate the actual hours worked and pay or compensate the employees for extra work. Banking a day off isn't a valid option because someone will have to cover your shift and continue the problem.

    Pros

Great benefits and annual bonus. If you fit in to the boys club you can push your career forward very quickly

    Cons

Difficult for female's to move through the ranks, it can be done, but it takes some work. There are no career advancement tracks or plans, no mentoring, no training programs.

    Advice to Management

It's time to buckle in and take a look at the bigger picture, synchronize and become a legitimate fortune 200 company with structure.

I worked at Western Refining full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

This was my first job out of school as an engineer. Great experience and great people. I had a lot of responsibility from the get-go and learned a lot. The salary was one of the highest out of all the people I graduated with.

    Cons

This was a salaried position and there was not a lot of work-life balance. It seemed we were expected to be there 7-5 everyday without a lot of work flexibility. In addition, if anything was going wrong in the units I felt like we were supposed to come in late or on the weekends whether or not we could really help. Turnarounds were tough working 12-13 hour days for weeks at a time but I believe this is normal in the refining industry.

    Advice to Management

Consider putting more of an emphasis on work-life balance. Relax the PTO policy so you can work 4 10's one week if you need to or make up hours if you need to take a day off.

    Pros

People work hard and care about the company. Kind of a family like culture. Benefits are top shelf.

    Cons

Small company that asks a lot of it's employees.

    Advice to Management

More vacation time and get ride of PTO. I wish we had an option to buy more vacation time.

I worked at Western Refining full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Given a lot of responsibility. This is great if you are a self-starter looking to gain experience like I am. Luckily this was noticed by my manager and I was able to advance.

    Cons

Some of the new direction the management was taking was not for me. Felt like a much bigger company with a lot of bureaucracy. It was a better place to work when it had a more family feel.

    Advice to Management

Slow down on the bureaucracy. Yes, you need to implement policies and procedures, but you don't need to do it by layering a ton of extra work on your employees. And you can do it without getting rid of the small company feel that you had when corporate was in El Paso.
