I have been working at Westfield State College (Less than a year)

    Pros

WSU's Banacos Center treats me well. They are very prompt with getting back to me for answers. My supervisors care about my progress and my hours are very flexible.

    Cons

There really aren't any cons, in my opinion, for the job title I have!

    Pros

A great place to work with a strong community, excellent benefits, good salary. Many employees have been here for a long time. More opportunity than many places.

    Cons

Bureaucracy, unfair methods of promotion, no reward for good work, only longevity. Can be hard to move up and around - can get pigeonholed. Occasional red tape.

    Advice to Management

More transparency, reward good work, keep employee motivation up.

    Positive Outlook

I worked at Westfield State College part-time

    Pros

Co-workers are friendly people in a rather casual college setting. Approachable management and there seems to be a degree of ease with regards to job mobility between campus jobs.

    Cons

Though the professors are quite interesting, the overall worker environment is not intellectually stimulating amongst staff-people and students.

    Advice to Management

As the college transitions to a university, it may aim to improve its quality standards and become a stronger university, attracting stronger staff and students from around Massachusetts.

  9. "Biology Department needs work"

    Doesn't Recommend
    Neutral Outlook

    Pros

Mostly friendly people, willing to work one to one with students

    Cons

Biology department is a book learning environment; there are few facilities or equipment for student or faculty research, despite a new building. Students will not be able to adequately compete with students from real research institutions, and that is what biology is about. Tenured professors show a decline in caring or participation.

    Advice to Management

Abandon tenure. It produces a profound "deadwood" effect in your professors. Many institutions get along famously without it. All it does is cause apathy.

  10. "Faculty"

I have been working at Westfield State College full-time

    Pros

Friendly and collegial work environment with most departments.

    Cons

Physical space is a challenge (no or small windows, no a/c in some buildings, leaky roofs, ancient elevator, ...). Byzantine politics of academia are somewhat in evidence. Leadership of former faculty often too deferential to ineffective committees.
