I worked at Westinghouse (More than 10 years)

    Pros

There was once a strong commitment to technical innovation, and nuclear safety was ever the ultimate objective. Most senior personnel were capable and committed, and willing mentors. There was once ample opportunity for career growth - even in lean times, for the able and ambitious. Salaries were above the median for the greater Pittsburgh area.

    Cons

All that remains are the nuclear service businesses. In recent years the "pros" are diminished or gone. While management was never the strong suit, the quality of management has deteriorated sharply over the last decade as too many hired into management lack fundamental understanding of technology, the business and the market. Political gymnastic overwhelm and compromise decision making.

    Advice to Management

Remember that the engineers are the vital resource. The poor conditions you have created will solve the head count problem, but you are driving away the top talent.

    Pros

Great benefits and compensation, nice headquarters, good people

    Cons

Growing too quickly, very disorganized, easy to get lost in the shuffle

    Advice to Management

Need to improve the siloed chaotic operation of the business and start functioning as a unit - IT and data systems to support growth are not there and the business units do not function as though they all are part of the same company.

    Pros

    - Industry is growing
    - Green company
    - Great salary & benefits
    - Management really seems to care about employee engagement
    - Many opportunities for young professionals

    Cons

    - Excluding engineering, career opportunities can be limited in certain fields
    - Growth opportunities in the future will most likely be outside the US and employees must be willing to relocate -- or at least travel
    - Management seems reluctant to introduce flexible working arrangements (telecommuting, alternate work schedules, etc.) that would improve family/work life balance

    Advice to Management

Continue to listen to employee responses to surveys and focus groups. Westinghouse is a great company, but needs to respond better to the needs and wants of the younger professionals in order to retain much needed talent.

    Pros

Very flexible work environment. You really are in control of your own career at Westinghouse. The employees and direct supervision are all very friendly and easy to work with.

    Cons

The requirement to charge a network and activity for 85% or greater of your time becomes frustrating after a very short period of time (if you are not "productive", you can not be considered for a merit raise - if you take your vacation and holidays, you are already only 90% productive). There is quite a bit of work that needs to be done, but it often does not accompany an active project. The company as a whole is a little top heavy - far too much emphasis on project management, and not enough emphasis on technical management. The business leaders don't seem to have a good understanding that the customers must be satisified. There is a great tendency in the organization to blame the customer when a deliverable is found to be deficient. There is concern among some of the working level that cuts may be necessary if the economy does not recover or the government does not provide money to the industry for new construction. There is also division between the engineers and technicians in benefits provided. Non-degreed positions get less vacation and pay more for the insurance benefits. It promotes a class system. Also, the winning performance bonus will no longer be given after 2009 because the company recognizes there are not enough profits to award the workers with a bonus and cover the overhead associated with Customer 1st and the New Reactors organization.

    Advice to Management

Re-focus the business on actual customer satisfaction - Not on the process of Customer 1st. A greenbelt project should only be considered complete if the customer is actually satisfied by the result- not simply because it met the internal metrics. Consider a different way of recording time - the current system is punitive. If you need the workforce, hire it. If you don't, then don't.

    Cons

all new people, hard to learn

    Advice to Management

more mentoring, with such a new group of people it would be very helpful to have mentors assigned to everyone so that teh learning curve is improved

    Pros

Best place to work if you are interested in the nuclear industry. Good benefits. Excellent cafeteria. Company is moving to a new location (Cranberry) that is a nice area. Senior management is very focused on delivering new plants.

    Cons

The young workforce is inexperienced. There is alot of pressure to meet schedule and budget. Steep learning curve for the procedures and processes used if not from the nuclear industry. The departements within westinghouse do not seem to work well together sometimes.

    Advice to Management

    Give young workforce more guidance.

    Pros

As a technical person, one is working with the world's leading commercial nuclear technology. This experience is very valuable within the nuclear industry no matter what career path is taken. There are plenty of opportunities for mobility within the company, and managers can't block a transfer to a different department after 18 months of employment.

    Cons

The technical roles are often undervalued by management. There is a shortage of technical analysts, so they are encouraged to stay in the same role while receiving minimal progression in compensation as a group. The compensation pool assigned for the department as a whole is often barely in line with or just below inflation.

    Advice to Management

Consider increasing compensation pool to nuclear engineers if there is interest in keeping qualified technical persons from seeking a management route.

    Pros

Great advancement opportunities. Management promotes advancement. Great amount of knowledge.

    Cons

People are very much in their own click of friends and help out only each other. Some feel as though they are better than others in the Accounting fields

    Advice to Management

Continue to spread the word about Nuclear Energy and its benefits to countries worldwide.
