I have been working at Westinghouse full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    - Good starting pay
    - Nice facilities/cafeteria
    - Location near Pittsburgh
    - Brilliant coworkers

    Cons

    - Procedures so overwhelming that maybe 1-3% of all time actually adds true value (not exaggerating)
    - Little interest in efficiency improvements
    - Unpaid overtime is answer to all problems
    - No interest in establishing competitive design practices
    - Far too reliant on competition (aka Natural gas) getting more expensive than us getting cheaper
    - Generally ignore problems until already far too late
    - Stagnant pay quickly becoming noncompetitive
    - Drive away best talent
    - Management actions rarely reflect words

    Advice to Management

Pushing all sacrifices on the employee with no light at the end of the tunnel has forced away thousands of talented people.

Treat employees like human beings, give them the right tools to succeed, be honest with them, pay them commiserate with performance desired, and develop a long term vision.

I have been working at Westinghouse full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    * Pay is above average
    * Flexible work arrangements available (telecommuting two days a week, 9/80)

    Cons

    * The company is completely devoid of effective senior leadership, leading to inconsistencies in policies and employee treatment throughout the company.
    * Very little attention paid to employee development, you have to fight tooth and nail to get training or development opportunities.
    * The overall atmosphere is terrible. It just feels like most people have no interest in being there, which is reflected by the terrible employee survey responses that come through every time.

    Advice to Management

Focus on employee development and facilitating team bonding, if you can give people goals and a bit of camaraderie it'll help raise moral.

I worked at Westinghouse full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The campus is nice. There's a sand volleyball court, tennis, and basketball court. The building has a game room and fitness center.

    Cons

The employees are over worked and don't always receive overtime. Groups don't communicate well with one another, so changes made often affect others than themselves.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the advice and suggestions made by the employees, they're sometimes more aware of what the issue are and how to fix them.

    I worked at Westinghouse full-time

    Pros

Talented and experience engineering staff that still works well together despite being dehumanized by Westinghouse management since about 2012 when the new "tough love" regime started.

Good option for the unemployed, easy place to get into. They need to replace all the people who are quitting to apply their abilities elsewhere. Everyone with marketable talent is leaving unless they are close to retirement or have to stay in the area because of spouse and family.

Free taxi cab ride home for those that got laid off without notice.

Nice building for spending your nights and weekends.

Slip and fall trainer machine, so you can learn to walk a second time.

    Cons

The company does not value their employees at all. Every perk and possible pro to working here has been removed in the past 5 years. 40 hours pay, 50 hours worked.

No appreciation for the engineers, They are just interchangeable resources and you will be called a resource.

Underhanded tactics to downsize by firing without paying severance. If you're not in the cliques and don't say yes to everything, your manager will cook up an indictment about how you've committed some petty offenses and you'll be put on Performance Improvement Plan to be laid off in the next round.

Not much engaging work to be found there now. Just a lot of paperwork to tie up loose ends on the new plants, endless training on procedures, and more safety trainings. You will be taught even how to walk.

    Advice to Management

    Quit

I worked at Westinghouse full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Decent pay and benefits at the time. Nice building and cafe was terrific.

    Cons

Its amazing what I have learned as far as Ovation Software logic and understanding control process after leaving Westinghouse for another company. After working about 5 years with Westinghouse I didn't learn much about Access Database queries that Westinghouse heavily uses for their design work. Nobody nor the company was willing to train me. However within 1 year of working at another company I learned plenty. On top of that I have learned so much in the logic design (especially analog control) after reviewing my old Westinghouse backups I kept I laugh at the simplicity of it. I can for see many control issues during the startup of the first AP1000 plant in china.

    Advice to Management

Train your Engineers and get everyone to help each other in understanding how to write Access queries and software logic. get rid of people not willing to help others as a means to try to have job security. All that does is lower moral and it just ruins a business down the road. You also need to have your managers actually figure out solutions to problems they bring up with processes or issues with other co-workers. When I was there they didn't do any of that and was all talk and no doing. so tings just got worse and worse until they left the company like I did.

    Pros

    Decent pay and benefits.
    Facilities are nice.

    Cons

    Pay raise freezes.
    Regular mandatory overtime
    No work/life balance
Regularly expected to work an additional eight hours a week, unpaid, to make up for budgeting and managerial shortfalls (amounts to a 20 percent pay rate decrease).
    Unresponsive management
    High pressure work environment
Ridiculous "nuclear safety culture" policies --threatening to close stairwells if employees don't use the hand rails has nothing to do with nuclear safety.
High attrition rate because employees are unhappy

    Advice to Management

Listen to employees when they give productions on the completion of tasks.
Reward hard work, such as working every Saturday in the months of August and September, by something more than an ice cream social
