I worked at Westlake Chemical as an intern

    Pros

The company is we known, so taking this internship will actually help your future job hunt. The work is great for an intern. You'll learn basic SAP skill, develop your excel skills, and really learn a lot if you apply yourself.

    Cons

The management is awful. They really don't care about the development of their employees, just that you do what they say (even if there is a more efficient alternative). Office culture is weird. Everyone just tries to stay low and not get in a managers way. Would definitely not recommend for an internship.

    Advice to Management

Please empower your employees. Most of the staff is looking at opportunities elsewhere because they feel trapped and stressed out. Bring the team together, encourage, motivate, and hire up.

enjoyed role with division I worked with prior to acquisition by Westlake

    Cons

processes are more bureaucratic than most organizations with decision making slow and limited essentially to the CEO with very little empowerment below the c suite

"Over worked and poor pay raises and bonuses"

    Pros

Good co-workers and a great place to build experience. Due to lean environment, you wear a lot of different hats. Good 401K program which has a match and defined contribution.

    Cons

Due to the lean environment, you feel overwhelmed very often. The average pay raise is below the inflation rate. Bonus metrics are never achievable even though company continues to post record profits.

    Advice to Management

Try to retain talent and keep up with the rest of industry with regard to raises and bonuses.

    Pros

In an operations setting, work can look very different day to day. One day could be devoted to meetings, while the next day could be devoted entirely to field work. Of course, everyday can be a mix of both.

    Cons

The company has a very lean outlook on operations, this could lead to work overload. But, this is the reason why the job is so diverse as well.

    Advice to Management

A long term outlook should be really considered. Employee happiness can really help productivity, burnout can lead to losing experienced employees. Losing experience can lead to un-quantifiable losses in the future.
