I have been working at Westmont College full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Beautiful campus, decent benefits, WeMo will match 7% to your 3% to your retirement, tuition exchange for you, spouse and kids, but no graduate programs.

    Cons

I'm usually the only minority in my office. My boss (a white WeMo alum) has said many times that her idea of diversity for our office is more men since there's only one in an office of 5. She also randomly told me that her husband (also a white WeMo alum) hates homosexuals. Never reported it since I felt her attitude is common an WeMo. There's definitely a glass ceiling for women, an even lower glass ceiling for women of color.

    Advice to Management

Stop the old-fashioned mentality. Today's college kids won't pay WeMo tuition to step back in time anymore.

I have been working at Westmont College part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The people are kind and genuinely care about the students. They all do their part happily and contribute to the betterment of the school and each of its departments.

    Cons

It can feel small at times, but this would only be negative if you enjoyed larger working environments. Some staff are not as efficient as others.

    Advice to Management

Continue to operate in a way that puts students first and provide services for them in an easy and approachable manner.

    Pros

Great way to earn a little on the side while in school full-time. Professors are super flexible and understanding when you have tests or medical emergencies.

    Cons

The administration is terrible and is ruining the ranking of the college. Also, they probably won't employ you for a teaching position unless you're an alumnus.

    Advice to Management

Pay more attention to the academic departments other than chemistry and less on building conference centers that have nothing to do with the purpose of a college.

I have been working at Westmont College full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Couldn't be happier in a workplace. Great leadership, sufficient compensation, and a super institutional mission. Oh, and such good-hearted, capable colleagues. It's unusual to work in a place with such clarity of mission—and that actively and genuinely seeks to live by it.

    Cons

I do wish we had more racial diversity. I understand that it's hard to enter a situation as a minority. But I believe we truly want to be a welcoming community that makes room for differences, and values them—and the people who embody the differences.

    Advice to Management

Please keep working on attracting people of various colors and cultures. That's uncomfortable for people sometimes (on both sides of the "equation") but very worth it.

    Pros

Working at Westmont was a great experience. Being around bright students, passionate professors all set in the beautiful foothills of Santa Barbara

    Cons

Pay, Westmont doesn't pay staff enough to make a living in Santa Barbara. It is so expensive to live there it just doesn't work out.

    Pros

Incredibly beautiful campus. Good quality student dining areas.

    Cons

Datatel system is old technology re-packaged as new and innovative. Under the hood, it's all command driven even to design screens. Not GUI, no mouse. Database is not relational. The users won't use Datatel because it's too complicated, Therefore, all it's data is pushed through SQL-Server and then deployed on desktops via MS-Access screens.

    Advice to Management

IT is in a beautiful old building but management should invest in better wiring so the power doesn't keep shutting down the system, which results in work products and data loss.
