I worked at Westmoreland Coal full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Growing company, looking for more acquisitions.

    Cons

Management is quick to fire people and does not develop talent. They do not provide much guidance or direction to employees, but expect you to perform at a high level. There has been a huge amount of turn over in the past two years, from Senior Management, down to lower level jobs.

    Advice to Management

Develop the talent that is already working at the company. Provide guidance and leadership to get good performance from your people.

    Pros

    Cons

Being forced to treat hourly employees in unethical ways. Forced to lie to cover upper management screw ups. Forced to lie to to cover up things during federal inspections.

    Advice to Management

Go back to treating people in an ethical manner. Stop covering up for management screw ups on site. Hold salary people accountable not just pass blame on

I have been working at Westmoreland Coal (More than a year)

    Pros

Most of the people that I work with are quite great. Of course there are always some out there but all in all, the people is what really what's still keeping me here.

    Cons

Went through way too much change in a very short amount of time, cut our benefits quite heavily, a lot of people were let go but no replacements so those left are picking up unreasonable amounts of work. A lot of people are burnt out and turnover is crazy. It happens through acquisitions but things were not well communicated at all.

    Advice to Management

Be more human and have reasonable expectations. Don't just stick to "running lean" but think of the people who are keeping the company going.
