I worked at Westpac Group as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

The Talent Acquisition Team are a really nice group of people. A genuine desire for innovation through technology.

    Cons

Perpetually under-resourced, but this is common in talent acquisition across a lot of companies. Middle management seemed to be trying to fix this but that didn't appear to follow through in upper management. Considering the workload, financial compensation was not good.

I was happy to be in a contract role but knew a few other contractors who had been there for 2+ years and not been offered a permanent role.

I would recommend to a friend on the proviso that they remained in open dialogue with their manager about workloads, and didn't do lots of overtime.

I worked at Westpac Group as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Helpful people - busy, but approachable
Very wide variety of working opportunities, naturally enough for a bank with 40,000+ staff

    Cons

Weak project management culture, at least in the regulatory/compliance areas where I worked
Moderately political place, middle managers jockeying for position, projects and teams being formed and disbanded for turf reasons

    Advice to Management

Develop cadre of project management professionals, and raise awareness at all levels of what projects can and can't do
Bite the bullet and invest heavily in IT transformation in order to catch up with and overtake CBA

I have been working at Westpac Group full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Work Life Balance, good opportunities if you are female.

    Cons

Layers upon layers of middle management getting in the way of getting things done. Pretty much taken over by the 457 visas brigade. Job can be outsourced at the drop of a hat.

    Advice to Management

Look at what ANZ is doing. Break down your IT empires and integrate your technical and business people into tack teams. Be really Agile rather than doing water agile. Get rid of some of the middle management who is doing nothing more than glorified accounting jobs.
