    Pros

    - Weta Digital is located in New Zealand. This is the main Pro. NZ is a wonderful country, and if you don't check out Wellington and environs during the summer, and make it down to South Island at least once, you're almost wasting the trip. -Pay is good, especially including all the OT, and you never have to work any free hours -If you are early in your career, you can get some very cool high profile footage... on your reel. (warning though, there are also a lot of low quality projects that won't help you much in this regard)

    Cons

Weta Digital is basically a collection of some of the best and brightest international VFX artists in the world, lorded over by an inner circle of low-quality blokes with utter contempt for the very concept of professionalism. That being the case: - Putting in the extra effort to make your work better will be appreciated by your peers that you are working with in other departments, and as a side benefit, will... help you get quality footage for your demo reel. But beyond that, it will do nothing for your status at Weta, and is not relevant to your chances of getting renewed or promoted. Actually, depending on your department, it could even hurt you. Employee reviews are about what the Supervisors and Leads think of YOU personally, not of your work. As such, the only way to avoid getting the boot is to already be friends with at least one Supervisor, or consciously put in the time to befriend them. I can personally confirm both that this approach does work, and also that nothing you can do on a computer is effective in this regard. - You will probably not get to challenge or grow either your artistic or technical skills at all, except that you will gain expertise in some very Weta-pipeline-specific tools (which probably will be thrown out and replaced with something else within a year or two). If this matters to you, which it should, then the correct strategy is to stay at Weta for a length of time just long enough to get 2 or 3 high-profile projects under your belt, and then move elsewhere to whatever doors that opens for you. (and along the way, do NOT skip the South Island vacation trip!) - If you are not a white guy, then optimally, that length of time should be no longer than one year. I know how this sounds, but once you notice it there, it is very very hard to unsee it.

    Advice to Management

There's not much I can say to management, as everything seems to be working exactly the way they want it. But to other VFX artists thinking of going, I can just say, think hard about what you expect to gain here, and really think whether that can't be accomplished more effectively, with less headache, somewhere else that you have access to. Odds are it can! But if all you want is a free trip to NZ, on the... company's dime... well, no reason not to do that I guess.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Weta Digital for more than 3 years

    Pros

Weta is located in the lovely (if very windy) city of Wellington. They are trying to reduce the amount of overtime that people do by using data from former shows to bid more accurately across the departments. Have performance reviews for everyone at least once a year so that you know what you are doing well and what you need to work on.

    Cons

Weta Digi is spread across several buildings in a couple of suburbs - can be a pro on a nice day, but takes time to get to and from meetings. OT can still be quite high for artists at crunch time.

I worked at Weta Digital full-time

    Pros

Get paid for overtime Food provided for overtime workers High profile projects

    Cons

Expected to work overtime constantly for months during a project Little care for people's health and well-being in spite of company policies Severe shortage of accommodation in city, assumed you'll share housing if single Every project like starting at a new company Politics and interdepartmental bickering has become ridiculous Often incredibly disorganised Lack of QC from one department to another Now hiring... leads and supervisors incapable of doing their jobs to a good standard Little loyalty to staff Pennypinching with staff pay and project budgets to increase profit margins HR unprofessional Wellington a surprisingly expensive city to live in No sick pay, no holiday pay

    Advice to Management

In my opinion, your company has become a factory where staff are pushed to the brink of severe mental and physical exhaustion to meet deadlines. Deterioration of their health is clearly unimportant if it interferes with the delivery of your projects. This is in spite of your policies which have very obviously been put in place for the company's benefit, not the staff. Stop taking on more work than you know you... can accommodate or staff your projects adequately so people aren't forced to work themselves into an early grave to increase profit margins. A hospital bed isn't a holiday. Show some appreciation to staff who work hard and deliver.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Weta Digital

    Pros

    - Great atmosphere - Great talent - Awesome projects - creative environment - probably the best wages in the industry - people are really being taken care of

    Cons

    - New HR people mean well but regulate away all the old charm as well as a lot of the "anything goes" spirit - because of new regulations were on the way to becoming just another studio - Wellington is remote to say the least - Long hours (but not as bad as everyone says)

    Advice to Management

Try conserving the old spirit. Dont put up too many new rules. Regulation inhibits innovation. Please lets not become just like all the other sweatshop studios.
