I worked at Weta (Less than a year)

    Pros

Exposed to many projects, great management and understanding of internship programs, plenty of opportunity for feedback, employees are receptive to informational interviews, hands on, small company means more interns have bigger role to play, pleasant working environment, great location in Shirlington, pay daily stipend for travel costs, inclusion of interns in team building and encouraging of outings (lunches, walks) to get to know team better

    Cons

Doesn't pay hourly, senior management can be a little stuffy

    Advice to Management

    Keep doing what you're doing!

I have been working at Weta full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Associating with a superior product feels good, and people in the area (over age 30) will know of your presence in the media community.

    Cons

Very few management possibilities exist because those who occupy the very few management positions protect their jobs from intrusion. It creates a "inside" political structure that can get vicious, and is certainly unrewarding to those who focus on doing their jobs well. You are likely to be most rewarded if you protect your bosses back, even if that means doing nothing else.

    Advice to Management

A house cleaning might work well for you... move out those who are simply protecting their turf, and move in those who seem to actually want to accomplish something.

    Pros

    * Collegial atmosphere, mutually supportive and cooperative
    * Civility a hallmark of personal and professional interactions
    * Clear direction and relevant, useful feedback from management
    * Appropriate delegation
    * Resources available when required to complete assignments

    Cons

    * Career advancement slow or non-existent
    * Salaries low compared to for-profit companies
    * Ratio of managers to worker bees upside down
    * Preponderance of males in positions of authority, females in subordinate positions

    Advice to Management

There is very little fat in lower paid staff positions, but a great deal in higher paid management positions. Recommend review and consolidation of management responsibilities.

    Pros

The only reason to work at WETA is their positive attitude in coping with work/life balance issues.

    Cons

Unprofessional, negative attitude toward women, significant glass ceiling, no career advancement possible, substandard management, no leadership or vision

    Advice to Management

Where is the leadership? Where is the vision?

I worked at Weta (Less than a year)

    Pros

Free parking. Working for a organization that has a great reputation in the DC metro area. High retirement match. Many employees have been there for years and truly believe in the company's mission.

    Cons

Narrow-minded managers (to include HR and News Directors) who do not embrace new ideas, new technologies, or promoting and growing employees. Managers do not hold themselves accountable for mistakes and pushes mistakes onto employees in their departments. Far from public transportation (i.e.: subway). Lack of company-wide communication. Lack of employee morale activities (holiday party, etc.). Old, outdated buildings that need a makeover.

    Negative Outlook

    I worked at Weta full-time

    Pros

Shared intellectual curiosity with colleagues. The mission -- although only half the org realizes it -- that as a leading PBS station there is an opportunity to provide teaching moments for both children and adults.

    Cons

The CEO and senior leadership -- this is a highly paid group who is complacent at best. Half of them spend $$$ like water because they still think they work for HBO instead of a nonprofit. It's a joke to the rest of the staff leading to a total lack of credibility. CEO mostly champions vanity projects.

    Advice to Management

Many of you have already Retired in Place. Now please move on.
