    "Great place to work"

I have been working at Wheeler Clinic (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I have been at Wheeler Clinic for 24 years. I have found job satisfaction and pride in being part of a company which helps over 30,000 people who come through our doors each year. There is a sincere desire to always improve our performance and to provide the best quality services for each child and adult who needs them.

    Cons

The only con's I can add are that we are a non-profit organization. This is not the place to look if you want the top salary in a business setting. It is the place to work if you want great experience and the opportunity to truly make a difference.

I worked at Wheeler Clinic full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Being part of a team of people dedicated to improving the lives of clients, students and the communities we live in.
    Good health and retirement benefits.

    Cons

Very lean, and resource constrained organization.
Gov't program funding makes it very difficult to be equitable and consistent.
Difficult work, staffing and retention risks, potential burn out.

    Advice to Management

Clinical and direct care work is important and is the 'true' work of the clinic, but lack of focus on infrastructure, development and equitable practices will leave employees feeling overwhelmed and unsupported.

I have been working at Wheeler Clinic full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Wheeler Clinic is certainly much better than my last job which was just terrible!! The compensation is pretty decent for the most part. However, you do have to work a lot harder here in order to earn that same compensation. I suppose that is natural enough thought. Work life balance is probably the best advantage of working here. I have the flexibility I need to work from home, which is very important as a new mother. Not everyone is that lucky however, and it really depends on which program or department you work in. Obviously, some departments and programs don’t offer the ability to work from home. I’m certainly glad that mine does, and I take full advantage of it! I also think that the structure and organization here is SIGNIFICANTLY better than my last job, which was just total chaos and anarchy!!!!!! So that is also another improvement or advantage for me. There are other advantages of working here like the benefits package and a good team of colleagues who I work with.

    Cons

The main drawback is clearly the workload. Even if you have the opportunity to work from home like I can sometimes, you still have to put in the hours to get the job done. That really is the only drawback about working here though.

    Advice to Management

When I compare the senior management here to the management at my last job, Wheeler is doing a MUCH, MUCH better and I want to recognize you all for that!! However, my one piece of advice would be for management to monitor the work load of their staff, so they don’t get to burned out!

    Pros

Work/life balance; generous paid time off, matching contributions; the prestige of working for a powerhouse in the industry

    Cons

Lower pay compared to other organizations, little room for professional growth, heavy work load

    Advice to Management

Protect your staff's time, do not delrgate everything, levy the work load, be knowledgeable in every process within your department. Implement 360 evaluation so staff may evaluate their manager's performance as well. Managers should be open to continued learning how best to manage staff. Lose the egos.
