I have been working at Wheeling Hospital part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The employees in my department are amazing, everyone really pulls together to help each other out. The pay is decent for someone with just a high school degree.

    Cons

There are so many "managers" for one department, yet we never see any if them. They have more meetings than any other management team in the hospital, yet many of us doubt they have anything to do with our department. The schedule is never done properly.

    Advice to Management

Know your department, you should be able to do the work you are paid to manage.

    Pros

They have slowly eliminated many of the problems in administration

    Cons

Culture is still poor with poor relationships among departments. People view the hospital only from the perspective of their own department.

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at Wheeling Hospital full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The hospital offers excellent patient care, has a dependable staff to work with, great benefits are available as well as competitive pay scale.

    Cons

Truthfully, there aren't many downsides to working at Wheeling Hospital. Like previously mentioned, the coworkers are great at what they do and the hospital certainly hires competent people.

    Advice to Management

Hire more full time employees rather than part-time or casual positions. Workload gets tough and extremely demanding when there are staff shortages.

I have been working at Wheeling Hospital full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Has decent benefits and excellent PTO. Wheeling Hospital has great potential to be an excellent workplace. EHR is catching up with the times, and training is very important to our department. There are great opportunities to further education while working. The hospital pays for much of your training and also reimburses for certification costs.

    Cons

Unfortunate leadership and little concern for attrition. When you follow the procedures for conflict resolution, you can rest assured that it will be blown out of proportion and will not remain confidential. Supervisors are not held accountable for addressing your private information in front of the entire department (such as FMLA) and they feel free to raise their voices and verbally abuse some employees without fear of repercussions.

    Advice to Management

While it is important to not coddle your employees, it is important to listen and communicate well with them. When there is reciprocity within the workplace, you are more apt to have satisfied employees that wish to perform well and make themselves worth the time and money your facility has put into them. When you have employees that strive to do excellent work for you, people that rarely complain about anything, and they express frustration and satisfaction, you really want to re-evaluate leadership and the effectiveness of current procedures.
