I worked at Whelan Security full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great team at my site and flexible hours. Site supervisor was always willing to work with his subordinates on hours.

    Cons

Low pay, high maintenance, no advancement. New site supervisor was a good person, but a terrible leader. Expected team to do tasks he was unwilling to do himself. Low morale at site.

    Advice to Management

Consistent communication among the sites would be an improvement, but consistent communication doesn't mean micro-management. I've been a supervisor while in the service and trusting your employees is the first step in a healthy professional relationship especially when trust is listed among your core values.

I have been working at Whelan Security full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Flexible scheduling to fit your needs. Great opportunities for advancement. Family oriented and owned company.

    Cons

Pay is on the lower end to comparable companies in the area. Benefits packages are as expected for this line of work, terrible.

    Advice to Management

Get out more and have true one on one conversations with your lower level employees to see what you can do to improve their life. You could really get some good insight from doing this to find out what is going on in your company and how it can be improved.

    Pros

If you want to work overtime its there. flexible schedule. Good benifits, you can even get discounts on your cell phone bill depending on the carrier and dicounts on new Nissan vehicles.

    Cons

Male employees are more likely to get promoted. Hiring process is way to long. Uniforms are cheaply made and they cost a small fortune for such poor quality.

    Pros

Pay is good, plenty of snacks at the site I am at, good support from supervisor, friendly people

    Cons

At the site I am at, very little room for growth unless you apply to work elsewhere, hard to get a hold of field supervisor at times

    Advice to Management

Some team members are always looking for the next step in their security career and being stuck in one spot is not helping them grew and improve. Overall not a bad company to work for.

    Pros

At first, I loved this company. The schedule was perfect. The pay was decent. They were very understanding. And helpful. The benefits were good and the distance to get to a site perfect.

    Cons

-overlooked for positions. -Does not properly investigate situations with employee;client. -Does not come to sites to check on employees.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employee before the client sometimes. The client is not always right. And they was not in my case. Be honest also. Be compassionate. And be understanding. You may be able to keep decent employees longer.

I worked at Whelan Security full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

They do offer the opportunity to call in and request overtime shifts at other sites. I personally didn't do this but had heard of others.

    Cons

Well, I'd say the main issue is their business model. They preach about how much they value and care about their employees, but it really doesn't show. The whole place is just one huge revolving door. They don't really put effort into hiring the right people to further their reputation or service. It's more like "oh, damn we just landed another contract, time to mass hire a bunch of crazies".

    Advice to Management

I don't know, it's always funny when nobody on hourly is getting holiday pay (for certain holidays), then you call in to the office and no one's there.

I have been working at Whelan Security full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Competitive pay, some advancement opportunities for "gunners", good managerial support despite distance between branch office and site, and ample available training.

    Cons

The supervisor is on call 24-7 (not complaining, just not ideal), regular raise mechanisms aren't always negotiated into the contract.

    Advice to Management

A greater focus needs to be placed on developing business in Tulsa.
