    Pros

Whirlpool is a fairly ethical company. With its base in the Midwest, it has deep roots in old-school American values and fair treatment of its employees. Salaries seem to be fairly high with great benefits packages, especially when you realize how cheap it is to live in Benton Harbor or Saint Joseph, Michigan, which are located right on the lake with spectacular sunsets and beaches.

    Cons

Internal communications (especially globally) are weak. This causes duplicated effort and silos of work influence. It is also pretty difficult to get a lot of changes made -- Whirlpool is not a very agile company.

    Advice to Management

When making spending cuts it sometimes helps to consider decisions a little longer. We need to invest in infrastructure more than anything, especially as it relates to technology and distribution. There is a lot of duplicated effort that needs to be addressed.

    Pros

I really value the corporate ethics and the family-oriented culture of the employees from the top down. There are plenty of opportunities to move around within a career to gain exposure to new parts of the business. The location of the headquarters is a great place to raise a family, especially in the summer with the beach nearby.

    Cons

The company is pretty old-fashioned and tends to be slow-moving, both in terms of processes and internal technology. It can often take a while to get things accomplished, and it is pretty common to get stuck with mundane tasks that don't produce very valuable results. The IT systems are especially outdated and can be a bit of a hindrance.

    Advice to Management

Invest in long-range assets and provide employees with incentives that create a passion for the work that they do.

    Pros

There are a lot of potential paths for advancement at Whirlpool. Given the size of the company, almost anyone can find their niche. I was able to move around within the company during my 9.5 years of employment to find a place where I felt as though as was contributing the most I could. It took a while to get there, and it required both personal and corporate change to make it happen, but it did finally happen.

    Cons

Being such a large company, it is easy to get lost. Depending on your desires, this can be either a good or bad thing. You also have to deal with the red tape and standardization that comes with an HR department trying to manage such a goliath. If you don't fit into the normal stream of things, it is difficult to find a place that makes you happy. You will be badgered to fit into that round hole, even though you may be a square peg.

    Advice to Management

Not everyone fits into the HR mold, there needs to be more wiggle room for those that are different. Whirlpool goes to great lengths to make people of all races/religions/etc feel accepted, but they have forgotten those with different skill sets.

    Pros

    Whirlpool generally understands work/life balance.

    Cons

Too much talk, too little action. Focusing on tomorrow instead of next month/next year by senior management. I have next to no faith that the corporation is going down the right path...

    Advice to Management

The world, our competition and our trade partners are changing. Doing the same old thing won't even get us what we used to get - it will ruin us. The churn created by unrealistic goals and targets causes great inefficancies, poor financial planning and burns out the rank and file. Senior management is not getting a true picture of reality or honest feedback from "middle management". Get in touch, take a walk around and visit the troops in the fox hole.

    Pros

This company is definitely Fast paced ... there is never a lack of meaningful projects to work on and there is a lot of visibility if you work hard and are career oriented ... with that comes acknowlegement for a job well done ... work sites are left to determine their own fate ... therefore employees know each other on personal level usually ... this is not a silo'ed company like most others ... base pay is very good and seems to be inline with the industry, locality, and type of work most of the time ... not very much pigeon holing going on either ...

    Cons

Work life is top priority, oftern to the point where managers will explain that person life will have to be shelved ... a very strong 24 hours in a day mentality as there are several manufacturing background individual in top leadership postitions ... business decisions are often based on emotion or my way-or-the highway attitude by senior management which leads to impression the group is out of touch with grass root level employees ... Whirlpool is in a very, very tight business and the margins on product are not what you think they might be ... very hard to discuss long-term planning with management

    Advice to Management

You're burned out and you're burning your employees out ...

    Pros

The fact that it is non-union is the best part about working there. It is a stable company that offers alot of carreer paths and has made a concerted effort to eliminate alot of red tape to freeing an employee to try to do what they feel can improve the business. It is a fast paced environment that has alot of investment into the facilities.

    Cons

It is an organization that is very involved in ones personal life and limits ones career growth due to not being in the "good ol' boys" network. For a woman coming into this organization there are several gender challanges.

    Advice to Management

Continue to improve on openness and improve compensation packages to make oneself more competitive in recieving more top shelf talent.

    Pros

Friendly people, lots of potential for improvement, #1 home appliances company in the world. This is a good place to work if you have a family and don't need a lot of professional growth. If you are young and ambitious, this probably isn't the right place for you.

    Cons

Conservative environment, poor innovation, IT staff are way behind the curve, could become the next GM if they don't change their ways. Oh and did I mention they are extremely conservative and hate change like cats hate water? Well, they are.
A common theme is "this is how we've always done it. why change? what's the value? what's the benefit? change is going to be hard... blah blah blah"

    Advice to Management

Change is inevitable. Either embrace it or find someone else that can. This isn't the 1950's anymore. Think 5-10 years ahead, not how it was in the past.

    Pros

Great products; Best in the industry. Its good to work for a winner. They have great benefits and generally try to do the right thing for their employees.

    Cons

We are so big that we are inefficient. A lot gets lost in the shuffle and that includes people. People dont have time to do the things that really affect the bottom line becuase they are off havng meetings about meetings. Really need a consulting group to streamline corporate and make a better connection to those out in the field. Also, there is no real accountablility...a lot of passing the buck. A lot of underused talent.

    Advice to Management

They need to do something about challenging and retaining the top talent that we have acquired. A lot of people are jumping ship b/c they are not being challenged, not growing professionally, and dont have a sense of bringing something valuable to the table.

    Pros

The workplace has a relaxed environment. People are friendly and your supervisors are ready to help you in most situations. The city of St. Joseph is beautiful and its a good place to hang out, especially in the summers. Most people leave from work early on Friday.

    Cons

Work environment is not very challenging. Time spent writing documents before testing can be done is too much. Overall, the company moves slow being one of the biggest appliance maker. It could improve much by changing the way the current system works to make the processes faster and the company agile

    Advice to Management

Decrease the amount of paper work or time spent getting approvals and testing

    Pros

Large company with resources in many areas. *Potential* to work on interesting products for the consumer market. Certain aspects of Whirlpool systems could be considered a best practice-for instance the Product Safety process. If you wish to learn, there is a great wealth of product knowledge relevant to the appliance industry. Benefits are on par with most companies in the industry. If you have a family, the Saint Joseph location is a nice place to raise your kids. There are opportunities to move around within the company.

    Cons

Certain areas of the company are top heavy, with more chiefs and less indians.
There is a lot of company politics-managers seem to be making decisions based on where they are heading next rather than the business at hand. This has resulted in some morale issues by those pulling the weight, and also in a lot of non-value added activity that may look good to the next higher level of management without adding productivity or improving morale.
Additionally, there seems to be a lack of decisiveness in direction. This may be a disconnect between senior management and mid-management that may prove hazardous in the competitive environment of household appliances.

    Advice to Management

Senior management is going to have to carefully evaluate the mid-management levels. While the salaried non-management people are generally productive and eager to put out good products, mid-management seems to be pursuing self-interest rather than contributing to the bottom line. Some of the behaviors on display may be walking an ethical tightrope. This is sapping morale and creating a lack of direction for employees.
It might be time to clean house and flatten out the corporate structure.
