I worked at Whittier College (More than a year)

    Pros

Most of the people you work with are engaging and fun. Vacation and sick time accrue quickly. Retirement match is really good.

    Cons

The pay is much lower than other institutions in the area.

I worked at Whittier College (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I ran one of the College's departments, so most of the time the administration of the College was pretty hands-off. They would usually let us make our own decisions regarding the direction of the department, simply because they didn't have the time or the inclination to even have an opinion.

    Cons

When I did have interactions with the upper Administration, they were condescending, clueless, and seemed to be incapable of making an intelligent decision.

    Advice to Management

Stop undervaluing the opinions of your employees. If you have people working for you who seem intelligent, don't assume that you know more than they do when you have no working knowledge of their department.

    Pros

Quality of life balance between work and home life. People are great to work with.

    Cons

Poor financial growth on career and salary. Can be difficult to keep morale up without incentives.

    Advice to Management

    Hire persons that care.

    You make your own hours.

    Cons

Assignments are usually due within 5-7 days, still not much of a con.

I worked at Whittier College part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The best reasons to work here include the general, friendly environment and the openness of staff if you have any questions or concerns related to the position.

    Cons

Some of the challenges of working here include the pacing, when things are slow they're very slow and when things pick up, they really pick up, you have to be flexible

    Advice to Management

Unrelated to the job position, but a note for upper management at Whittier: Actually listen to the student body's demands and interests, it reflects poorly on the rest of the academic setting when it's so clear that there's a disconnect between higher up staff and the students they're meant to be serving.

    Pros

    Cons

Not enough oversight. Impersonal- I never dealt with upper management, only my immediate supervisor.

I have been working at Whittier College part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Professors all care about you and will take the time to meet with you when needed. The community in general is very supportive and helpful.

    Cons

Scholarships do not protect students from increases in costs. The administration only cares about money and chooses policies that benefit the bottom line at the expense of the students.

    Advice to Management

Do not make new dorms without creating extra parking. Quit building unneeded athletic projects.
