I worked at Wight & Company full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The culture at Wight & Company is client focused and management understands what it takes to keep employees singularly focused on the client's experience. Engaged Owner, top-flight Group Presidents, collaborative work environments and great benefits all combine to develop young talent and energize the employees.

    Cons

Occasional disregard of the value the construction group brings to the design/build process. No design is perfect. No "build" is perfect. But the synergies created through a dedicated and focused project team can get the project as close to perfect as is possible.

Wight is, first and foremost a world class design organization and this single "con" does not argue that at all. The construction group constantly strives to deliver world class PROJECTS, and that's where the focus sometimes falls away.

    Advice to Management

I am proud to have worked at Wight for thirteen years. It's awesome to see the growth of the design group through acquisition and to hear about the ongoing successes of the construction team. This is not an easy business to be in but Wight & Company has solved the equation through "obsessive attention to quality, detail and speed."

I have been working at Wight & Company full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Projects are exciting, different, and always offer a challenge. The people working at Wight are talented, innovative, and provide "world class" projects.

    Cons

Projects schedules consistently seem to be condensed over the last several years and team sizes are inversely shrinking making people burnt out. Designing school offers little to no down time, summer are busy with construction and winters, especially right before the holidays are busy with getting drawing out to bid for the next summer.

    Advice to Management

Better communication cross disciplines so we appear as one company to our clients.

I worked at Wight & Company full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

They really value their employees so managers take the time to develop your skills. Great place to learn and work on different projects. Even if your passion isn't school designs, you will work on projects that have interesting aspects and are different from one another. They also have lunch presentations almost daily where you can learn about new products or projects within the company (and free lunch!).

    Cons

Sometimes there are some communication pains between departments. Since it is integrated design, building aspects can sometimes change and affect other groups, and are usually done close to a deadline

    Advice to Management

    More holiday time off!

I worked at Wight & Company (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Excellent mentorship, really great coworkers. This was a fantastic place to work and learn, among really dedicated and intelligent people. I felt that I got a good range of experience here, and you have the sense that the management really cares about and invests in their employees. It's also quite a family-friendly atmosphere - as in, it's actually possible to work here and have a family and some semblance of work-life balance.

    Cons

The company owner is a lawyer, not an architect - so even though his father was an architect and he is intimately familiar with architecture, sometimes it seemed as if the creative, iterative process necessary for good design was stymied a bit. You can't "architect" the same way you "lawyer."
One unfortunate thing that is hard to change - location. This is the ONLY reason to not give 5 stars! You'll have a hard time attracting young new talent out to the suburbs, away from any public transit.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the fantastic mentoring. Get some more projects (besides just corporate interiors) in that Chicago office, or offer the opportunity to split time between the two offices, in order to attract more new talent.

I have been working at Wight & Company full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Development of young staff, extensive responsbility, incredible employees, many design opportunities if you're willing to take them. Extensive interview process that must work because personalities are very easy to get along with.

    Cons

Economy has spread employees a little thinner but truthfully nothing that no one else is dealing with.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you're doing, you really care about your employees and it shows.

I worked at Wight & Company full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Multi discipline firm with many opportunities to learn and grow your career. High percentage of projects revolve around schools K-12. Nice main office and satelite office in the city. Half day / caual day Friday's. Good staff and culture. High focus on hiring the right staff for the job.

    Cons

As everybody know the economy is rough for an AEC firm. Staff size reductions has increased the typical workload per employee greatly. Doing more with less definately applies here. No bonuses for staff below upper management.

    Advice to Management

Bigger engagement in getting staff involved in inititives and open input to how the firm can improve.
