    Positive Outlook

I worked at Will County Forest Preserve part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Laid back environment, pretty scenery, able and conscious co-workers. Taught the value of hard work and manual labor, while being able to see beginning to end result of work.

    Cons

Outdoor weather conditions were brutally hot this summer. It was hard to escape from upper 90 degree days, while exerting oneself physically.

    Advice to Management

Overall a great place to work, people were understanding and helpful. Equipment was top of the line and helped workers to complete their jobs well.

    Doesn't Recommend

    Pros

Their cause is an excellent one. Preserve open space inside Will County, for use by residents and future generations.

    Cons

Management cares only about themselves and how high they can push their salaries. They take polls of the average employee, and SAY they care about it, but they don't. Then they whine and complain about how much health care costs, and how hard it is to pay for everything! There are a LOT of over-paid people there, and there are several useless lumps passing themselves off as employees, but are never released or properly managed. Way too many whiners and moaners, and very few people who actually work hard. The people who do work hard, are rewarded with more work, and more criticism, with little to no financial compensation upgrade; and they flat out refuse to re-work 10-year-old job descriptions to make them accurate.

    Advice to Management

Get your act together and take care of your employees. Take time to actually listen to their concerns, and requests for professional growth/assistance. The organization is way too top-heavy, and those people could not possibly care less about fellow employees in lower-level positions.

I have been working at Will County Forest Preserve full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The mission of the organisation is great and they do try to protect the environment. When possible, they try to be flexible with schedules.

    Cons

Top heavy with management. Too many 15-20 year employees more concerned about making it to early retirement then doing their jobs effectively. Culture is to remove struggling employees rather than improve them. More and more becoming political. Outdated job descriptions.

    Advice to Management

Several have openly admitted how low morale is and yet beyond getting us a salary increase (the first in four years that is about to be countered by lesser health insurance), very little, if anything is done. Pay more attention to your jobs and less to your retirement date. Don't let the organization get completely micromanaged by political figures. You like to boast that we are not as corrupt as Cook County--show it.
