I worked at Winona State University full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Faculty are represented by a union so the pay and benefits (for tenured faculty) are better than at most state colleges.

    Cons

Many departments are decades behind the most current research and best practices in the field.

    Advice to Management

Work on updating your department, course offerings, and course names - it is long overdue.

I worked at Winona State University part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

My supervisor was very helpful and I felt comfortable reaching out to him whenever needed.

    Cons

The software used in 2013 to open and close calls felt very outdated. There were so many steps that even after a few months of doing the same thing over and over again I needed a sheet to review how to complete the steps. Now that it's 2017 I'm sure the software is now better.

I worked at Winona State University part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great people, lots of downtime for homework, easy going, laid back, not many questions to be answered, only duty is making sure printer is stocked/working

    Cons

Can be boring if there is no projects to do or you have no homework, some professors are outdated and refuse to use updated software

    Advice to Management

The student workers are a very easy bunch to manage, let them do their homework if they are overwhelmed in school and there is nothing to work on.

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at Winona State University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Superior life/work balance. Good compensation for the region, especially a small town. You can make a difference in student's lives. Faculty and staff are highly skilled and dedicated to doing a good job. The institution promotes cooperation between departments and for the most part, department heads work well together.

    Cons

Within IT, resource and project management is extremely poor. There is no career planning or pathway to advancement. Leadership in IT area is completely lacking; directors lack basic management skills and don't really lead their staff. The CIO is only interested in furthering his own career and has created a culture where some privileged staff members are allowed to obstruct and directors and leads feel helpless to stop it.

    Advice to Management

Encourage the CIO to move on with his career, then CAREFULLY refill the position with someone who can change the culture.
