I worked at Winton Group full-time

    Pros

Marketing and well managed client communication. Mature datasets and experience working with them. An inspiring history. Although systematic trading based on data-driven scientific research may now seem commonplace in London, Winton was one of the firsts to embrace it at scale. Efficiency: like many hedge funds, Winton has no problem getting rid of employees it no longer wants.

    Cons

I am writing this review with research job candidates in mind, especially those just out of academia. High employee turnover. Among my cohort of a dozen researchers hired a few years ago, almost none are still at Winton today. We joined Winton from diverse backgrounds, in most cases with a PhD degree and some cases with industry experience. But with perhaps very few exceptions everyone is now gone. Winton would...

    Advice to Management

Winton can improve the culture by replacing some of the directors who brought about the current situation.

  2. "Good place to work, but not for long"

      Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

I worked at Winton Group full-time for more than 3 years

      Pros

Smart colleagues, free food, nice office, in-house doctor. The base salary was ok, but good bonuses.

      Cons

No job security - people were let go quite frequently, even back-office staffs. Very political.

I worked at Winton Group full-time for more than 3 years

        Pros

The quarterly cash bonus was really good in the golden age of Winton, but reduced performance has pushed these down. The offices are well-maintained and the canteen is free.

        Cons

Toxic culture, no trust, limited career opportunities, constant reorganisation. Winton feels like a tired company trying to recover its former glory purely by focusing on PR. For various reasons there has been very little yield from its huge research efforts outside of blog posts and internal powerpoint presentations. As a result, it feels as though Winton’s early advantage in data-driven approach has been eroded....

        Advice to Management

Pointless. CEO has total power and the only ones he would ever take advice from are Jim Simons and Warren Buffet.

I worked at Winton Group full-time for more than 5 years

        Pros

Very talented colleagues; opportunities to access, create and deploy novel data sets; rewarding intellectually and financially if you stay the course and are flexible; rigorous statistical methods; internal and external lectures from leading experts in the business and broader areas; quarterly bonuses; sensible DC pension scheme with good company contributions; private health care; life insurance; breakfast and lunch;...

        Cons

Lack of flexible and remote working options. Not so much a con but being willing to defend your work under rigorous questioning is a necessity, robust sense of humour likewise.

        Advice to Management

        Implement flexible and remote working.

I worked at Winton Group full-time for more than a year

        Pros

Used to be a wonderful place to work - interesting, collaborative, challenging, with some genuinely impressive people to look up to. However they have now all left. Free food and nice offices Bonuses have been good at times In-house doctor is great

        Cons

Constant and sudden change, firings, teams being dismantled and moved around, people being promoted one second and demoted the next with no explanation. Employees have no security, and no trust or confidence in the future. Senior management, including David Harding, will talk very negatively about other senior management, publically and in front of junior employees. Management will spend huge sums of money on private...
