I worked at Workday as an intern

    Pros

Get placed on development teams and work alongside full time engineers who are very helpful and want you to learn. Large intern program so theres lots of fellow students to hang out with.

    Cons

App Dev uses a proprietary language so skills may not be very transferable.

    I worked at Workday full-time

    Pros

Fun company, nice people, good managers, lots of opportunities to learn and opens a lot of doors

    Cons

The post college program (GWs) can easily get stuck and don't have a lot of opportunity

    Cons

Percentage of sales people that are making there assigned quota is low.

    Advice to Management

Keep innovating and fix the quota assignments so that a more aggressive percentage of sales reps and sales managers make their quotas.

I have been working at Workday full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Company culture is strong and clearly important to Senior Leadership and that flows down thru management. The management style is collaborative and as a result, the politics of many companies this size doesn't seem to be as prevalent at Workday.

    Cons

Work-life balance is not as easy as it should be. While no one is saying you must stay late or work into the evenings / weekends when home, the company is growing so fast and hiring isn't keeping pace. To get the job done - it often means long hours.

    Advice to Management

Continue with the open communication and focusing on keeping the company culture! But also keep employee retention in mind as business decisions are made - the learning curve is long for developers and many of the young ones seem to be on the fence about how long they are going to stay.

I have been working at Workday full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Love the fun and culture of the company. Supportive team members and cross team collaboration makes getting things done easier. Management focuses on career development and is supportive of lateral moves.

    Cons

Pay is not competitive, no annual raise for inflation, stock is given out instead of pay increases. Poor performance doesn't mean that employees will get cut, not a very competitive environment.

    Advice to Management

Focus on hiring the best talent, and paying them more, vs hiring too many people that aren't the most qualified.

    Pros

Workday is a great company and has an awesome culture. The management teams all the way up to the CEO are easy to work with and in my opinion make very good strategic decisions with regards to growing the company.

    Cons

There is little or no opportunity for career advancement.

I have been working at Workday full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Work is challenging and exciting.
    Colleagues are intelligent and friendly.
Managers are very capable and technically strong.
Perks are good like fruits, bagels, snacks etc.
    Very positive environment.
Workday is amazing company cares for employees.

    Cons

One star is missing for one reason but it is very important to address. Pay is way below market, stock based compensation is not enough to cover the pay shortage.

    Advice to Management

My advice to management is that please please work on the compensation, many are frustrated without hikes for many years. There are lot of talented people thinking of moving out of workday and even complaining that they get paid less than apps teams. I understand cost cutting not at the extent of losing dedicated talented and smart people.

I worked at Workday full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Some of the best people I've ever worked with, in terms of technical skill, management and leadership prowess, and just as human beings. Senior management is extremely motivated and taking steps to maintain and nurture the great culture that Workday was founded on, as well as the high-efficiency startup feel.

    Cons

Newer managers (either first-time or new to Workday) don't always fit the culture and can become toxic to the environment if not identified early.

    Advice to Management

Focus on culture and development efficiency, and promote/showcase those who embody the culture and mindset that Workday was founded on -- our people are #1.

    Cons

Technology used for the application developer is not going to help to market you in some year down the line as it is not used any where else.

    Advice to Management

Application developer should be given some of the technology related training apart from the one used in the development so that they can contribute in different ways to company

I have been working at Workday full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Workday has great people. It has become a refuge for ex-Oracle and ex-Amazon employees, where employee abuse is rampant. In contrast to these companies, employees are treated very fairly, unlimited PTO is real (if used wisely and you get your work done). The company is doing very well with HCM, almost all tech companies are using Workday.

    Cons

Other products (such as Financials) are not doing as well as HCM. It's not like they are failing, but there is much more to be achieved, and we will see if the gamble will pay off.

When it comes to recruiting for engineers, the hiring bar is wildly inconsistent. I know some crazy talented people who got rejected first round, and then some mediocre people who breezed their way in. This is unacceptable if we want to grow the company in a healthy way. There are some crazy great engineers here, who are balanced out by mediocre talent.

Like everyone else has said, pay is below the market. This can be fixed if we stop hiring masses, and choose engineers more selectively.

    Advice to Management

Look for ways to standardize the hiring process, so that we can hire the best. It's better to have 5 engineers who know what they are doing, rather than 10 engineers who sort of know what they are doing.
