    I worked at WuXi AppTec

    Pros

First Wednesday of the month, you get free It’s a good first job out of college for industry exposure.

    Cons

Overworked and underpaid. There’s often favoritism within the staff. There’s a lot to learn at first, but then it’s just repetitive. Growth is limited, supervisors weren’t supportive in their employees career growth. There’s high turnover rate... I wonder why.

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees equally and be more inclusive, people are willing to work for you if you’re kind to them. Offer more projects and inspire employees to have ideas for improvements. I shouldn’t even have to tell you this, it’s common sense to look at the big picture if you’re in management... that’s also how your own career will grow.

    Pros

Experience out of college. Some people care, the majority do not. If you're a hard-worker, this is not the place for you.

    Cons

-Terrible training program that can be identified by trainees fresh out of college with no experience. The training is long for no reason when trainees mainly learn how to clean equipment and perform aseptic manipulations. The main goal is to get you through "training" as quickly as possible which causes mistakes and NCEs, costing the company money. Terribly organized and a waste of time, it would be more beneficial to place"trainees" in a process they'll actually be in to learn first-hand by watching and asking questions. Trainers don't care if you're really trained or not, mostly if you signed off on all of your 200+ SOPs and the trainings they're required to give. If you put trainees in the process they'll be on, trainers working on that process and supervisors too are more likely to care about training because they want competency, as well do the CLIENTS. Clients have even complained and recognize the lack of training in newer employees working on their process. -Claims to want to improve the company with continual improvement tasks yet no one supports any type of change and likes to stick to the old way, funny coming from a "new, growing company". Listen to your newer employees and SUPPORT them, they are more likely to find flaws in the current system than employees who have been in the same environment. -The company targets recent college grads because they don't know any better of industry standards and are desperate to pay off debt/loans, WuXi takes advantage of that. They're asked to perform tasks that are beyond the scope of traditional manufacturing associates because they are understaffed due to high turnover rates. Other departments refuse to do their work causing stress on the manufacturing department. -As others have mentioned, high turnover rates are a cause of great, enthusiastic workers being constantly beat down by mandatory overtime, underappreciation, lack of promotions and pay increases. You have recent college graduates impressed with the appearance of WuXi and excited to start their first job out of school only for them to find out what a terrible place it is to work for. -I'm not sure why WuXi won't just pay their associates more hourly for them to feel more appreciated for the hard work being done. The amount of money wasted on acquiring new employees, training them, and having the new employees generating NCEs due to being new and lacking experience/undertrained could easily be used to retain current talent that work hard. Entry level associates are treated as dispensable when WuXi should be working on retaining the talent they hire to generate less errors overall. New hires on trainee row every two weeks. -No one gets fired unless they really mess up. This causes issues between high-performers and slackers. Slackers aren't told to stop sitting around doing nothing by management while high-performers aren't recognized or incentivized. Everyone gets paid the same and will for a long time until you're there for a year or more, if you can handle the mental and sometimes physical stress for that long. -Workers are gossipy and the spirit of "team" doesn't exist. Management doesn't care about morale or workers. Be prepared to be treated as a piece of machinery yourself.

    Advice to Management

Do your job and manage your workers. Be a good leader and take your job seriously. Be consistent with the rules for everyone. Management is gossipy, favoritism is visible and real.

    Pros

Gain industry experience for those without any.

    Cons

Just to name a few: Horribly disorganized and lengthy training program, poor communication between departments, low morale. The most discouraging aspect of the company though is management/HR’s refusal to increase wages in order to retain the talent that they get. It should be no surprise to anyone that a company that pays $18/hour and is very slow to promote should have extremely high turnover rates. Yes, myself and every other manufacturing associate knows exactly what the pay is when they accept the position. However, what is discouraging is that many of my coworkers including myself were passionate about the products Wuxi manufactures and wanted to learn and make an impact at Wuxi. And most people I encountered enjoyed working with their peers (although some groups aren’t the friendliest) and relished the opportunities and challenges that came along with working at a newer company. But because of how low the pay is and because Wuxi doesn’t identify and promote talented workers those people end up leaving and going to other Pharma companies in the area. The thing is with the amount of money Wuxi spends on training good people who end up leaving in 4-6 months they could easily increase wages and solve their retention problem. Funniest part is that management was constantly holding meetings and roundtable discussions looking for way to decrease turnover and increase morale. I mean how clueless can you be? Its just bad business to treat entry level workers like disposable entities. Doing so gets you a team of unqualified, unmotivated and untalented workers. There’s no mistake as to why when you walk around the building half the people look like they’re on the verge of jumping off the Ben Franklin bridge. News flash Wuxi: THIS IS NOT CHINA. Unless the pay changes, I would not recommend this job to any newly grad out of school unless you have been rejected by every single other pharma company in the area and this is your last resort. Even if that’s the case leave after a couple of months of gaining experience.

I worked at WuXi AppTec full-time

    Pros

I worked with some of the nicest young people just starting their professional careers. They were tons of fun, smart, likable, and talented young people that made each day interesting.

    Cons

People/management who had never spent a minute doing "your" job made decisions about "your" job without any input from the person performing the job. Deadlines were set that were unrealistic. Metrics were kept that had no real relevance to actual job performance. (For example 1 error on a 60 page document still counted as 100% wrong rather than something relevant like 1 error out of a 12,000 word document or ranking the relative importance of an error in a GMP environment.) The staff in my department had a very high turnover rate as employees quickly moved to other positions to escape a toxic work environment. Staff were fired for trivial reasons regularly. Retention is deplorable with turn over in a year or less of entire staff.

    Advice to Management

Considering the time investment for training new employees I would think that management would be under pressure to retain more of the employees that were trained. Instead, the employees were treated as disposable and replaceable.

    Pros

Some great, talented people. Bagel Wednesday is always fun. Can't think of any other pros.

    Cons

Low pay; not competitive with industry. Management doesn't value employees. High turnover rate. Favoritism...just a churn and burn environment. Will not hire to handle increasing growth. Expect current employees to work late and handle workload.

    Advice to Management

Pay the talent that you do hire and promote fairly within. Value your employees.
