I have been working at XL Catlin full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good people who are interested in ways you could advanced and good benefits
Many employees have been here long term

    Cons

Raises and bonuses are not what they use to be for lower level employees

    Advice to Management

Budget reductions should start from the top, don't stop providing snacks and Kleenex to everyone when your upper management is spending $8,000 on one flight to Switzerland.

I worked at XL Catlin as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Friendly environment. Fun place, not intimidating but people will call you out if you are faking it. Upper Management was disconnected a bit though to the rest of the work force.

    Cons

Crappy coffee, some people on other teams didn't seem to like working there. No or very little interaction with other groups/teams

    Advice to Management

Streamline operating systems and get more cohesion between groups. Don't separate them based on types of insurance sold!

I worked at XL Catlin full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Company pays very well and senior management is very knowledgable. Not enough authority in the field, which makes being responsive difficult.

    Cons

Very flat organization not much room for advancement.

    Advice to Management

Give more UW authority to the managers in the field and get rid of the bottle neck.

I worked at XL Catlin (More than a year)

    Pros

on the edge programs that takes all IT employees to enhanced skills. I like the location and the managers

    Cons

The size could be bigger. Hard to get around so many companies intertwined in bond insurance market. Could have more company spirit.

    Advice to Management

Keep thinking growth. Employees are counting on the company moving forward with new market expectations. Should be easy to grab new opportunities.

I have been working at XL Catlin full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I think the merger has given XL Catlin a wider footprint and greater opportunity going forward. Company is still small enough such that individual employees can make a name for themselves and there is opportunity to learn quickly if you are willing to volunteer for more responsibility. Mike McGavick is an out of the box thinker and has a lot of great ideas for the future of insurance that I hope our company implements.

    Cons

Bad systems both before and after merger - neither company had great infrastructure and now it is worse because the systems don't "communication with each other." Poor morale in some offices post merger because legacy teams are adjusting to cultural change and missing many colleagues who are no longer with us.

    Advice to Management

Invest in infrastructure and systems - it will solve so many problems. Or at least outsource - the problem needs to be dealt with. Certain offices have "pocket" cultures that aren't in alignment with main culture of company because these are offices acquired through merger (even before Catlin - XL merger). Spend more money on clear communications to bring all offices in align with expectations and culture.

I worked at XL Catlin as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

It's an incredibly open place, with everyone happy to take a half hour to meet a random intern with no relation to their department. They do a great job of helping the interns interact with senior leadership, which is remarkable at a company of 7,000 people.

    Cons

The work was a bit slow, and in some positions it can be very rote. I was fortunate not to be in such a position, but the Risk Management majors who were interning with me had jobs that weren't quite drudgery, but could get repetitive. Still, I suppose you know what you're getting into if you're an RM major.

    Advice to Management

None. I'd say employ more interns, but that will happen in a summer when the company's not undergoing a huge merger.

    Pros

Excellent pay; benefits; personnel. As an employee you will work with some of the most reputable and knowledgable underwriters in the industry.

    Cons

There is practically no promotional opportunity from the entry-level ranks. The company is comprised of senior-level personnel from all of it major competitors which accounts for its high salaries. It is is the Yankees of insurance, seasoned veterans with their best years behind them.

    Advice to Management

Create a program for entry-level employees to provide advancement opportunities and develop a performance based pay scale to avoid younger more productive earning 50% less than their more seasoned less active co-workers.
