Add staff to provide a happier work environment
Practice what you preach and be more transparent. Do exactly what you say you will

I have been working at XL Catlin full-time

    Pros

Great benefits, great work-life balance, great corporate culture, a lot of young coworkers.

    Cons

Stagnant in position. Title changes but little growth in learning and in profession over the years. Lots of IT issues. Catlin acquisition did more harm than good unfortunately.

    Advice to Management

Find a way to challenge and promote employees that have outgrown their position.

    Pros

Great compensation package and benefits - 401K match is great!
    Hard-working every day employees.

    Cons

No consistency or feeling of job security due to off-shoring tasks and continued merger pains.
Management is big on theoretical discussions and big ideas but lacks when it comes to implementation and taking action.

    Advice to Management

Adapt to changing environment when needed but the key to maintaining employees is to formulate coherent plans and see them through.

    Pros

    You can leave before 5pm

    Cons

Boys' club amongst the legal team- they hate the majority of women yet gossip worse than any woman you've ever seen.

    Advice to Management

Don't do favors for friends-you end up with I'll matched managers. Instead, hire people that actually know how to lead.
Change the HR Dept dynamic so that it's not set up just to hear needs of management, but instead all employees. It serves the company better in the end.

I have been working at XL Catlin full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

There are NONE whatsoever. Don't waste your time!

    Cons

Moving professional Claims jobs "off shore" to Poland and India and laying off experienced Claims Staff. Expecting people left to train Polish and Indian staff to handle claims in a matter of weeks when in reality it takes years to cost effectively manage claims. The staff left will be responsible to manage the "off shore" staff - because the "off shore" staff don't have licenses to work in the US. Upper management believes this is a 'cost effective' method to save 500 Million dollars by year end 2017. In reality, all they care about is increasing their bonus' and screwing over the employees on the front line. Cost of benefits skyrocketed this year!!!

    Advice to Management

Get ride off duplicate, ineffective and inexperience management staff. The company is going down the tubes with these unbelievably short term 'fixes'.
