      Alright place to work

Aug 3, 2010 - Lead Financial Analyst in Herndon, VA

      Pros

      - There are always opportunities to move around within the company if your job doesn't fit with your style. - There are some really great people who work there. - Lots of little perks like random days off, being allowed to leave early before holidays, options to telecommute, fun days like free movie days.

      Cons

      - There is sometimes somewhat of an adversarial attitude between departments. - Some of the managers can be unnecessarily negative and can spread a tense feeling throughout the office by their mere presence. - It can be hard to concentrate in a cubicle farm. Noise from people just doing their jobs carries from across the room. - The information systems are horrible, it is like trying to get water from a stone to get usable information out of some of the systems, often dealing with millions of dollars of revenue. - Management doesn't always listen to its analysts, who often have their ear to the ground and are immersed in the information they are supposed to be making their decisions on. - Management is often quick to pass the blame on when the consequences of their decisions turn negative, or even get the expected results, but expectations have shifted. - Computers are archaic, I don't know how they expect me to be an analyst with a computer that barely works and they have supposedly been upgrading the laptops for nearly a year and I have barely seen any evidence of it.

Excellent place to learn and grow, hard to stay focused in chaotic environment

Feb 5, 2014 - Network Engineer in Plano, TX

      Pros

Great network. Great people that want to solve problems. Good technical and mid-level managers that want to help people learn and grow. In most markets, the hands on operations folks are extremely dedicated and smart. If you want to work hard, learn, and create solutions, XO will support your efforts. On the other hand, there are traditional positions at XO that are very stable and some people with the right backgrounds can coast along for 15+ years. As with anything, what you get is commensurate with what you put in.

      Cons

Frequent re-organizations. Too many types of technologies, too many vendors, and projects. Insecurity about future plans from an ownership and high level management perspective. Layoffs are not that nice either... I have not seen XO doing very much hiring in the past 2 years.

      Pros

Great People, Great Technology, strong and aggressive sales culture, a lot of tenure in some markets.

      Cons

Lack of funding, bad CRM, no strategic long term plan for the company, too many band aids for ongoing issues with network outages and lack of support.

Great team members and people but poor management and moral

      Feb 6, 2014 - Engineering

      Business Outlook

      Pros

      - Flexible work hours - Telecommuting is encouraged and if your manager allows it you can work 2 days from home in a week - Great people in my team and in general - You get to choose from a range of worthless crap (iron, toaster, etc) at your 5 and 10 yr anniversary!

      Cons

      - Moral very low as every 1.5-2 years there is a massive layoff, so you're always in a limbo about job security - Lots of bureaucracy - Depends on your division, but promotions are very few and far - Salary is OK and you really have to fight for a raise - Health insurance is a joke
