You get out of this job what you put into it.

      Pros

Berkshire Hathaway Company, endless resources to help you accomplish your goals. Yes, you have to relocate, but they are very clear with this in the interview process. Those that post that are not happy about relocating are using that as an excuse. Relocating is a smooth process and they help you with every detail. Monday-Friday work schedules, no weekends. Can be very rewarding. There is opportunity to switch from ops to sales.

      Cons

Need a dedicated operations regional employee to be more of a resource for the operations side. (I’m in sales)

      Pros

Decent starting pay. Dependent on the area you start off as when you are an operations assistant. Hands on training with tenured staff that will show you what to look for. Bonus-able after becoming management with the company. Excellent benefits (Berkshire-Hathaway Company). Great work life balance (no weekends)

      Cons

Micro management comes from top down. Sales staff constantly telling operations how to do their jobs. All senior management comes from sales side. No one in operations can be promoted past an operations manager. Responsibilities for position do not directly correlate with the pay.

      Pros

Thisis a great company to work for! The work is hard, and can be estremely fast paced, however it is very rewarding. Great opportunities to advance, but relocation is a must, otherwise ther is no opportunity. I worked hard to stand out during my first 4 months of training, and was rewarded with my own $20 Million location to manage, where else can you do that! Great bonus opportunities for Managers Excellent benefits Very little weekend work, only during customer emergencies Berkshire Hathaway company, great stability, and as ethical as you can get!

      Cons

Relocation is a must if you want to move up the ladder. Some may consider this a con, but I certainly don't.

Good Company with some problems that they need to address.

      Pros

Great place to start a career and get your foot in door in regards to the transportation industry. You will work directly with the biggest companies in the industry and establish professional connections. You will have the newest fleet and you are the top shelf equipment provider for the trailer leasing game. Decent benefits package after 30 days Ability to get promoted quickly* Berkshire Hathaway Company discounts Big money is in any sales position. Sales staff have competive salaries, make commission, and are on a bonus plan. You will be able to get a hold of your regional management with just one phone call. Not a lot of companies can say that.

      Cons

Every company has problems. Here some problems that many others would agree with. A big problem at XTRA is their Relocation policy which is now acting as a double edged sword. I agree it was needed at one time, but i think it needs to reevaluated. It has filled vacancies, but has caused problems in field by promoting personel that are not ready advancment and has eliminated the amount of experienced staff at branch especially when it comes to branch operations. The turnover rate of operations staff is terrible. Maybe bring back some AOMs at larger terminals to eliminate headaches. The other reviews are dead on about micromanaging. It's unfortunate , but that is age we live in and XTRA is not the only company that does this. Entry level operations pay is very low and causes many to move on. Mid 30s is hard to live on of you have student debt and living expenses. Opportunities for promotions are no longer posted to company employees for branch manager and operations manager jobs. You may never know when a potential opportunity opens up. You will be approached and many employees are also skeptical of the so called comittees who make these decisions. Company needs some more Regional Operations Managers. Area Managers are very supportive, but will never be able to what a ROM does for operations.

      Pros

Quick advancement, good pay/benefits. Branch Manager role has evolved from a sales rep to a true General Management role. Berkshire Hathaway Company, leader in industry.

      Cons

Long hours, additional Management responsibilities equals more hours. Must Relocate, if promotion is offered and turned down you have a job until they find your replacement.

      Good benefits, lackluster elsewhere.

      Pros

XTRA Lease is part of the Berkshire Hathaway conglomerate, which gives them the resources to supply above average benefits.

      Cons

The silo mentality is strong throughout the organization. Any resemblance to a workplace culture is nearly non-existent. Upper management is very distant and their loyalty to even the most tenured, dedicated and talented employees is zero. I've never worked at a place that essentially discouraged new ideas and input from their employees. I worked there for nearly 10 years and not one person was promoted from our department. A part of that reason is that the company is 35% smaller than it was 10 years ago. They are not growing. They are stale and it would take a complete overhaul to see real change.

      Pros

It is a Berkshire Hathaway company, which has the benefits of being very financially strong. However, the parent company has high expectations for returns and doesn't like excuses. Pretty flexible, open to suggestions, good corporate environment

      Cons

Little room for advancement beyond mid level management. Very centralized decision making process.

      Pros

Will train you from knowing nothing as far as you're willing to go. Small company and smaller branches. Good company to start with if you don't have much/any experience. Great work life balance. Never work weekends or nights. Berkshire Hathaway benefits.

      Cons

Starting pay is EXTREMELY low at lowest positions. If you're not in a sales position you can only be promoted once. Being in sales can lead you to VP or even the CEO position. High turnover throughout the company.
