      Pros

I have been with XTRA Lease for 6 months and have enjoyed every minute of it! Very simple job with great compensation and benefits. It's a good blend of white collar and blue collar work. You will spend most of the time at your desk, but every once in a while you get your hands dirty. If you are a quick learner and can think quickly on your feet, opportunity for promotion is pretty much guaranteed within 4-18 months. A good entry level position into the transportation industry. You will also get to travel quite often as an Operations Assistant to train and cover for other Managers.

      Cons

Although the company may give you the option to say no to move at the first opportunity, don't count on being able to say no the second time. You MUST be willing to relocate. Promotion past Operations Manager is nearly impossible, but the compensation and bonuses are so good that many people get comfortable and prefer to stay Operations Managers. If you are looking to eventually move on to another company, the experience you will gain as an Operations Manager is extremely valuable.

      Operations Manager

      Pros

Decent starting pay. Dependent on the area you start off as when you are an operations assistant. Hands on training with tenured staff that will show you what to look for. Bonus-able after becoming management with the company. Excellent benefits (Berkshire-Hathaway Company). Great work life balance (no weekends)

      Cons

Micro management comes from top down. Sales staff constantly telling operations how to do their jobs. All senior management comes from sales side. No one in operations can be promoted past an operations manager. Responsibilities for position do not directly correlate with the pay.

      New Hires Beware

      Pros

The bonus is nice if you don't get fired before then. The branch employees become like family, and you create relationships for years to come.

      Cons

There are a lot of cons. The company is making a push to hire fresh young talent especially on the operations side. They promise you good training and fast promotion. Don't be fooled! The reason why they are promising this is because they are slowly finding ways to get rid of the tenured operations staff and "promoting" the new hires. The company constantly makes changes and says it is a "condition of employment" if you don't follow the change even if you have a history of being an exemplary employee. Once you become an operations manager you reached the ceiling of your career path with the company unless you relocate to a bigger branch. Beware of that as well. This just exposes you to more things to get fired for. Most of the region staff does not care about the branch employees. They will tell you good job on monday and fire you on tuesday. There is no long-term careers with the company, If you get stuck working here continue looking for another job. You will be fired eventually!

      Treats employees horribly

      Pros

The only pro would be working with some great people at the branch level. You gain some great relationships here.

      Cons

They do not treat employees very well. This company is run on fear. You come to work and you are afraid that they will tell you to move or get fired. The entire culture of the company is horrible. They are constantly losing great employees because of the move or get fired philosophy. Employees who have been with the company for years and were told they did not have to move are now being told to move or their job will be lost. Over 10 branches this year have either had their operations manager fired or the manager just quit. Never has their been that many openings within a year. They have also fired over 20 assistants because they would not move for Xtra Lease. This move or be fired mindset is causing great talent to leave the company. I would not recommend this company to anyone.

Good Company with some problems that they need to address.

      Pros

Great place to start a career and get your foot in door in regards to the transportation industry. You will work directly with the biggest companies in the industry and establish professional connections. You will have the newest fleet and you are the top shelf equipment provider for the trailer leasing game. Decent benefits package after 30 days Ability to get promoted quickly* Berkshire Hathaway Company discounts Big money is in any sales position. Sales staff have competive salaries, make commission, and are on a bonus plan. You will be able to get a hold of your regional management with just one phone call. Not a lot of companies can say that.

      Cons

Every company has problems. Here some problems that many others would agree with. A big problem at XTRA is their Relocation policy which is now acting as a double edged sword. I agree it was needed at one time, but i think it needs to reevaluated. It has filled vacancies, but has caused problems in field by promoting personel that are not ready advancment and has eliminated the amount of experienced staff at branch especially when it comes to branch operations. The turnover rate of operations staff is terrible. Maybe bring back some AOMs at larger terminals to eliminate headaches. The other reviews are dead on about micromanaging. It's unfortunate , but that is age we live in and XTRA is not the only company that does this. Entry level operations pay is very low and causes many to move on. Mid 30s is hard to live on of you have student debt and living expenses. Opportunities for promotions are no longer posted to company employees for branch manager and operations manager jobs. You may never know when a potential opportunity opens up. You will be approached and many employees are also skeptical of the so called comittees who make these decisions. Company needs some more Regional Operations Managers. Area Managers are very supportive, but will never be able to what a ROM does for operations.

      Jan 14, 2016 - Assistant Operation Manager

      Pros

The branch atmosphere is almost family like. For the most part, people got along, worked well together and shared laughs at the same time. The transportation industry is extremely fast paced and always changing and that makes the time go by quickly. The requirement to move in order to move up can be seen as both positive and negative. For a person who is single and doesn't have kids, this kind of system is great. Trailer sales commissions offered to operations staff. This is positive that they get some commission but negative because not all sales are commission eligible for operations staff unlike the sales staff who can get commission on all sales. I was mentored by an area manager who had been with XTRA for 15 years and a regional operations manager with over 25 years of service at XTRA. These two individuals were great leaders. They promoted me and I did relocate once although it was within the same state. Sadly both are now gone.

      Cons

One of the biggest cons that XTRA has is how they view and treat the sales staff versus the operations staff. The sales staff gets all the glory and the bigger bonuses and there is virtually no chance of crossing over from operations to sales. Several years ago XTRA went though a huge push to sell old trailers so they enlisted the help of the operations staff to make sales calls. They ended up lowering the commission rate because the operations staff around the country were so successful at selling trailers. I sold $250,000+ in trailers 3 years in a row and yet was never recognized. The operations staff is generally looked down upon as inferior employees and yet they are the ones who are running the branch. Sadly, XTRA has "bled" talent to competitors the past five years. (myself included) Many of their top performers and high level managers have left because of the treatment they've received from executive management. Regional managers now only view you as an expense on their P&L. If they can save money by cutting corners, they will do it. For example, they made all branches cancel their janitorial and landscaping services. All branch employees were now responsible for scrubbing toilets and pulling weeds. My former operations manager brought his personal lawnmower to the branch so the lawn could be cut. No offense to any janitors or landscapers, it's hard honest work but I didn't graduate college to scrub toilets dirtied by a bunch of truck driver's or to pull weeds around the branch and yard. XTRA has closed a number of branch locations in the past 5 years including 4 on the west coast. Employees who work at small branches are worried if their branch will be the next to close.

      Terrible.

      Pros

      Health benefits were decent.

      Cons

Good old boys club. President is out of touch with personnel, and his company. He's not a people person. Regional office personnel are only there for themselves. Absolutely no autonomy when it comes to making decisions for your branch. Constantly under the radar, and you are treated in a belligerent manner, regardless if you are doing good or not. Trained and managed to sell/work/operate with fear as your motivator. Stay away unless you need a one or two year career!! Average time for a branch manager or operations manager is 2 to 5 years, and then you're out!!! Whether it's your decision or not.

Does not value their branch-level employees.

      Pros

Yearly bonus is great for branch and operations managers. Monday-Friday schedule is very consistent, rarely any weekend work. Company is very helpful with relocation and moving expenses. Health insurance is included, with a nice HSA amount given each year.

      Cons

That nice bonus I mentioned is held over your head ALL YEAR LONG. Branch managers get double the bonus of operations managers even though operations works 10 times harder. Salary for all managers is quite low and yearly raises are rarely given. Regional and corporate leadership treats branch employees like incompetent children and micro-manage unlike any other company I have ever seen. There is very low moral across the country due to these issues. No room for career growth for operations- you will be stuck as an operations manager your entire career as they only want sales staff to move up the ladder to region or corporate management. Most managers with decent experience end up leaving the company for competitors that treat their employees better. This is causing a severe breakdown of the training process for operations employees across the entire company.
