I worked at XenoPort full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Reasonably talented scientists; subsidized lunches

    Cons

Chances of technical success are low.
Low compensation structure compared to similar companies.
Won't give up on Horizant when that product is clearly going nowhere.
Hiring at the top is a nightmare; they can't hire and keep good leaders, except for Vince Angotti.
    An old boys club.
One of the key problems is that Ron Barrett is a scientist, not a business-savvy professional. Nice guy, but can't make effective business decisions for the good of the company.

    Advice to Management

Consider having Vince Angotti take over as CEO and execute against his vision.

    Pros

Ron is a great guy and a strong leader. He needs to keep focused on moving drug candidates forward and earn FDA approval

    Cons

There is no current on going research program. Therefore, the long term potential for the success of this company is unknown.

    Advice to Management

Please remember to value your employees, and do not lose focus of their contributions. Encourage communication within and across all departments.

    Pros

fast paced, start-up like company though it exists more than 10 years. It has a lot of smart guys there, you can learn a lot of new things

    Cons

the business has not prove itselfe yet. It just lay off half of its employees. I guess a lot of co-workers had lost a big chunk of their savings... the work place is not flexible enough.

    Advice to Management

could create more work-life balance environment to employees. overall I think they did a good job so far. No body can control test result... it's not your fault the tests failed.

    Pros

It is a very friendly working environment. Shared work and communication among different groups are good. Free soda. Used to offer free lunch.

    Cons

Spending too much money on departments that didn't generate revenue, instead but just burning cash. Unfortunately leading drug did not get approved.

    Advice to Management

none. Nothing to say as it just laid off 50% employee, including entire research people who laid eggs for the company.
