I worked at Xilinx as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Xilinx is a decent place to work. Contractors are trained to do things the "Xilinx" way with access to technologists, circuit designers and other resources needed to complete your work. Pay was good. Collaboration was encouraged which made me quite happy as this is one of best aspects of engineering teamwork.

    Cons

Contractors, although treated well, are still outsiders. Encouraged to become part of the team yet cannot take part in any celebration events honoring individual contributions. I find this insulting considering the sacrifices we make to make the projects a success.

    Advice to Management

Hire locally. Outsourcing to design centers around the world is perhaps cheaper, but has its limitations with added costs. Treat contractors like they might become tomorrow's full timers.

I have been working at Xilinx (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great people and team depending on which organization you work in. Good benefits.

    Cons

NO work/life balance, no career growth or development although the HR preaches it. Company has a bad tendency to put unqualified individuals in people management positions. HR is not there for the employees.

    Advice to Management

Respect people as a valuable resource by retaining your talent pool and start putting the right people in the leadership roles.

I worked at Xilinx full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

great products, broad customer base. you can own a lot of activities and drive them. closely integrated with sales and engineering

    Cons

very under-staffed. what used to be 5 people jobs are now handled by one. So people are spread too thin and quality suffers

    Advice to Management

be open to hiring new college grads and interns. this enables to the senior people to handle more strategic activities rather than be buried in tactical stuff

I worked at Xilinx full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very good compensation package. Top of the line gym in San Jose.

    Cons

Every workplace has its politics - it's a matter of what you can take. I personally found the cult of personality at Xilinx was unbearable. Performance reviews/focal is ridiculous - overly burdensome with little to no ROI.
