I have been working at Y Media Labs full-time for more than a year

      Pros

Leadership- they are passionate visionaries who don't mind rolling up their sleeves and helping solve problems every day. Thanks to them, org is very flat, egos don't thrive here, and titles generally don't carry weight-impact does. People really care here. For instance, our CTO recently made sure that our janitor feels recognized for his hard work. It blew me away as it exemplified compassion at a level higher than...

      Pros

The people are great and it feels like a family. Fun being exposed to many different projects in a short period of time.

      Cons

As a smaller company, it is hard for them to match the benefits/perks of the larger companies in the area.

      I worked at Y Media Labs full-time

      Pros

      - The employees are great for the most part - company wins some big name clients - free lunch on mondays - "unlimited" pto

      Cons

      - unnecessarily strict work from home policy - no 401K matching - very cheap on everything (Frontier flights, crappy motels, etc for employee work travel) - very very very inexperienced leadership due to this being most people's first job in their assigned roles (aside from the handful of external folks that have been brought on recently) - company tenure is rewarded over actual skill and leadership abilities - still...

      Advice to Management

Continue hiring leaders from outside of the company with years of proven experience across DIFFERENT companies. You can't honestly believe that people who have worked here and only here have the best industry knowledge. They are simply well-seasoned in the workings of YML not Product Management, UX design, Sales, etc. Renting a house in Hawaii for a year that mathematically cannot provide every employee with an opportunity...

I have been working at Y Media Labs full-time for more than 4 years

      Pros

The team that I have been fortunate enough to be a part of is made up of excellent group of people. Every engineer has an opinion, except that in this group of people the opinions are formed from their vast experience in the software development industry and it is backed by solid reasoning, not feelings. The engineering director is an oracle of all things engineering and makes the environment and culture educational,...

No real downsides here. Some times the deadlines get a bit intense, but that is a cycle, and happens every where and not unique to Y Media Labs.

      Advice to Management

Keep your focus on the people and keep nurturing their talents.

I worked at Y Media Labs full-time for more than 2 years

      Pros

The time I spent at YML forged me into the contributor that I am today. I owe a lot to the management team and my wonderfully collaborative former colleagues. The people at this company are generous with their time and knowledge; and that's what really makes a company great to work at in my humble opinion. If you're going to join this company be prepared to participate with the same gusto. Furthermore, the management...

      Cons

The management team is kind of strict about their work from home policy, however, given the kind of culture and number of people in the CA office it's difficult to argue against the reason why the company would want their employees in the office. Additionally, the nature of the business and client timelines mean that at times developers will have to grind hard. If you have poor work ethic this place isn't for you.

      Advice to Management

Given that the leads have a pretty good feel for the pulse of a project, give them discretionary powers to allow developers and QA to work from home. Sometimes to go fast you have to go slow and by giving people the choice to work at their pace for a day is still a win-win.

I have been working at Y Media Labs full-time for more than 2 years

      Pros

YML is an ambitious company that treats its employees with respect. I'm consistently surprised by the talent surrounding me. Everyone is treated like experts and trusted to perform the tasks required without heavy-handed oversight. Conversely, at the same time there is a culture of collaboration and sharing of knowledge which I adore. At the time of writing this review, I have been employed by YML for a little over...

      Cons

With corporate HQ in California, there are sometimes time zone issues for events, but they're handled as well as could ever be expected. The Indianapolis office is small, but it's growing.

      Advice to Management

Continue taking care of your people like you do. Continue all the efforts to improve communication between teams/offices. As the company grows, please try not to give in to too many of the "this is why we can't have nice things" situations that inevitably happen during the transition.

      Pros

Most coworkers are great people and talented Designers take good amount of project ownership Some great projects and good clients Relaxed culture (in some aspects) Flexible hours Flexible PTO Full kitchen Free lunch on Mondays and occasional team events

      Cons

Poorly structured Lack of good leadership Big lack of communication and transparency - leadership will straight up lie to employees after making terrible decisions Problems within the company are usually ignored Some leadership only care about protecting their backs, and not helping the company and other employees grow They find talent, but don't grow it They will also hire some people just because they seem cool Company's...

      Advice to Management

Start conversations with your employees Work on how you can grow the talent you have Take a hard look at who is in leadership and see who is actually fit to lead Don't lie to employees and pretend everything is great when their are clear issues in the company that need work Go back to truly focusing on improving product and not just pushing a bunch of useless features and changes on clients
