I have been working at YRC Freight full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

still hope, if top management would come around and ask employee's by them selves to see what is really going on

    Cons

management is so bad, they could listen to employee's , but don't

    Advice to Management

clean house, I would love to take a high level boss around on surprise check's to show them how it is real time mismanaged

I worked at YRC Freight full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Most workers are good people to be around. Upper management has great intentions.

    Cons

Middle management is mired in "protecting their jobs" so much that the core aspects of the business are being neglected. They seem to be willing to spend money to fix things that don't need fixing but fail to keep the people that make the company go.

Pay scale is abysmal for corporate employees. Promises get made for promotions and increase, but that never happens.

Middle and upper management like to take credit for other people's work and ideas.

    Advice to Management

Figure out what business you are in and focus on the key aspects of that business. Also, remember that you are a freight company and not an information technology company. Having the best and most recent computer system means nothing if you cannot deliver freight on time without busting it.

I worked at YRC Freight full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

it was a good job while it lasted, then the end came crashing fast. Knew it was coming , like Santana walking out of his cell on American Me, next thing ya know , I was falling from the top deck stabbed multiple times and discarded like an old rotten chunk of meat.

    Cons

Top five things---- 5. always on the clock, my time did`t mean a thing to them 4.Never enough time in the day to complete the miracles that this company wanted. 3.Departments work very hard against each-other. 2.The "good ol boy" click, if your in the boat your bound to float! and numero uno, the best is last 1. Watch your back, EVERYONE from drivers to management to the janitors , will be the first ones to twist the knife in your back as soon and as fast as they can. Must be a bonus program that I was not aware of!

    Advice to Management

STOP, STOP, STOP forcing good people out the door, get down out of your ivory tower and walk the walk you expect employees to follow.

    Pros

The only pro's of this job are the benefits and the opportunity for overtime pay. If it wasn't for the overtime this job would not be worth the headache

    Cons

The constant change of direction from management, the poor condition and age of the equipment, the moral is terrible. The 15 percent cut in a pay wage that is already below a national standard is also a problem.

    Advice to Management

Bump our pay up to the current standard of a diesel mechanic, get the mechanics training, get some new equipment, spend more money on the facility and tools to do the job.

I worked at YRC Freight full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

There were a lot of great people devoted to this company, myself included

    Cons

Very bureaucratic. Long history using people up and then discarding them without any regard for their contributions. The dysfunctional behavior seems to be the only thing thriving in this company.

    Advice to Management

Recognize the right people, get rid of the political backstabbers taking credit for other peoples work. Bring back the people you discarded at the same you made millions.

I have been working at YRC Freight part-time

    Pros

Good experience in the transportation and logistics field

    Cons

Union employees can and will say whatever they want to and not get penalized for it....Part time employees work 45+ hours a week.

    Advice to Management

Treat employees as people, not numbers.

I worked at YRC Freight full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The pay was ok, but the stress wasn't worth it.

    Cons

Zero training and you are held accountable when its wrong. I was promised numerous times I would get trainin, that never happened.
Extremely disrespectful, rude and offensive upper management with zero support from HR. Numerous complaints from other employees about same issues. Company walks a fine line of unsafe DOT practices with junk equipment. They hire managers with zero trade experience or knowledge to run a facility. Micromanaged by management on a power trip.

    Advice to Management

Respect goes a long way, try it some time.

I worked at YRC Freight full-time

    Pros

If you like a job where you never seem to get to finish a project before you are pulled in another direction, this is the place for you. You won't get bored because you never know what the "next new big thing" is that someone wants to implement.

The employees themselves are trying very hard to do good work.

    They do have good benefits.

The corporate headquarters is conveniently located next to I-435 so it is easily accessed from anywhere in town.

    Cons

If you work here, you'd better negotiate a good salary because you most likely will never get a raise.

401K match is too little to really add up. No matter how much you contribute, the company will only match 2 percent.

Always have your resume ready because layoffs can happen at anytime for any reason to anyone.

There is the constant black cloud hanging over everyone's heads that the company could go out of business at anytime.

Moral suffers from lack of management direction as well as no real sense of accomplishment. The systems are old and hard to maintain. The creators of most of the systems have left or been let go many years ago.

I worked at YRC Freight full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good people, I will miss some of my dockworkers. I have a great deal of respect for people who actually care about their jobs.
Higher than average pay in the industry aka golden handcuffs.
Learn everything about what not to do in a professional workplace.
If you hit goals, upper management will leave you alone.
Work 48 hours and receive no phone calls during your 3 day weekends.
Gain a thick skin dealing with hostile workers and environment.

    Cons

Very low morale, entire workforce hates each other or the company. Bitter and sour old union workforce and managers. 80% of the union workforce are unmotivated and overpaid. Extremely high turnover in management (one year we went through 10 supervisors and managers). This place will eat your soul and happiness.
Old school management style resistant to positive change or progress.
Bully style management concerning scheduling. Intimidation and favoritism among the "good ol boys". Older supervisors avoid discipline from upper management. Don't even think about getting sick, you will be treated like worthless scum. You will be called vulgar words when you try to take a sick day. Very unprofessional.
Out of touch corporate engineers/managers. Outdated computer system, programs, and production grading system.
Union contract very protective/near impossible to issue discipline.
Dirty work environment; dust, rats, birds, feces, spit, snow, slush and mud on the dock.

    Advice to Management

Take care of your employees and they will take care of you. Get rid of the old dinosaurs running the place and put some young blood in upper management. Stop writing local contracts that shoot yourself in the foot. Stop favoritism with the old supervisors and select dockworkers, treat everyone equally and fairly. These issues are not isolated to one DC, I have worked two across the nation and the problems are consistent.
