I worked at YRC Freight part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Parking is close to dock :) fork lifts have gas in them. Santa Maria is nice. You get pulled over in your truck by highway patrol right in front of the works warehouse consistently.

    Cons

Poor training. New guys get NO hours. They got me down to 12 hours a week. Benefits are the worst. Month to Month benefit package :o

    Advice to Management

Train better. Pay better. More hours for new hire. New trucks, old trucks are dangerous. Keep drivers on the same routes. Have a steady schedule not, I’ll call you in the morning if we want you to work for the day.

I have been working at YRC Freight full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good pay and benefits are ok not the greates but other than that not much.

    Cons

Where to begin. First dealing with union employees is a pain in the butt. They are lazzy as hell and worst of all they feel entitled like the company owns them something. They act so childishly it feels like you are there to babysit not manage. If you ever think of working in Bloomington CA stay away from there unless you are another lazy union employee. This terminal needs to be shut down and lay off everyone so they can appreciate how easy there job is and how lucky they are to have a good paying job. One good thing is if you are single and are thinking about having kids go work there so you can see how not to raise your kids and trust me its will be a good parenting experience

    Advice to Management

Fight the union get rid of them. Fire all the lazy trouble making employees, you guys have way to many of them. Treat your management team better and have their backs.

I worked at YRC Freight full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Many Services within LTL environment, Ability to quote Truckload, Airfreight and Trade Show excellence

    Cons

Equipment very old, struggling service on non guaranteed shipments, continuous restructuring to the point of concern. Sales not respected and makes aligning for results difficult

    Advice to Management

Become a selling organization again and let full trailers help push service and profitability. Operations are very important but customers need to know they can count on their sales contact to make the right decision and move on to grow the business

I worked at YRC Freight full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The people are great. Managers and co-workers always willing to lend a hand or advice.

    Cons

Irrelevant in the LTL industry for the most part. Costs are structured in a way that does not allow YRC to remain competitive. Until costs can be lowered they will remain a low performing company. Competitive pricing means that most, if not all, accounts will operate at a loss in the long term. Market share to profitability to market share to profitability and back and forth and back and forth. Just look at their financial statements in the 10-k. Bankruptcy looks to be forthcoming given shareholders deficit. They may have been able to hold off due to the diversification and mergers with several other companies, but its only a matter of time. Bureaucracy is also a major issue. Silo between operations and sales.

    Advice to Management

Management, as far as I could tell, is made up of hard working, smart, good people. Its tough to make a dollar in the current market conditions and their jobs are full of pressure and difficulty. There may be a need for the guys that have been there forever to move on, and let the younger generation innovate. They also need better strategic thinkers.

I worked at YRC Freight full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

For the most part, workers there have heart and care about doing a good job.

    Cons

Not innovated enough on the tech side to stay relevant in the industry. Seems bankruptcy is in their near future.
There aren't enough people to do the work so projects are behind and no work/life balance for most employees.

    Advice to Management

Invest in technology to make work easier if you are not going to add valuable employees. Or don't and watch employee turnover increase even more.

    Pros

Good technology and tools for the Weights and Inspection Coordinator position.

    Cons

Old, outdated, and obsolete equipment in the dock. Poor training of Unionized labor. Unionized labor is not trained to work with W&I department and won't comply with change in SOPS.

    Advice to Management

Update personnel training and obsolete equipment used in the dock. This might uplift the morals and energy of the unionized labor.

I have been working at YRC Freight full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good paid benefits easy to get hired plenty of hours up to 70 week. 8 years ago one of the best companies to work for.

    Cons

Since the merger 7 years ago everything has gone downhill. Worst morale in drivers I've ever worked with. I'm making $3 less an hour than I was told I would. And some of the worst equipment on the roads. Short on trucks and employees in every position because of pay. 90% of employees are 15 to 30 yrs employees and spend their days trying to get even for the cut and pay, hard to do your job when nobody else is doing theirs.

    Advice to Management

Start making the employees accountable. Stop letting them sleep on the job, literally. And stop letting long time employees run the business and do whatever they want while they're not doing their job.

I worked at YRC Freight part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The Teamsters do their best to provide benefits and safe equipment for their Union members. The equipment is well used but generally sound.

    Cons

YRC Freight company is on shaky financial ground. They hire a lot of new drivers and then drop them just before they are eligible for Teamsters membership.

    Advice to Management

Get honest with your new hires.

    Pros

The pay is great and the Monday thru Friday schedule is pretty good if you want to work days.

    Cons

No incentives for better performance, no bonuses, no company picnics or safety points.

    Advice to Management

Work on better life-work Balance and use incentives to motivate union workers to work harder.
