I worked at Yahoo full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

They had some great perks and you get a chance to solve problems on a very large scale. I got some exposure to exciting open source projects.

    Cons

Very disorganized and very low morale. There were huge layoffs while I was there, and one of the founders left. It was a rough time for Yahoo! Also, although they embrace open source, a lot of tools that are critical were forks of open source things that were poorly maintained or quickly abandoned. Some of the more mature forks developed into basically proprietary tools, with little, or poor documentation. There was a lot of out for number 1 and teamwork was lacking. Many teams did basically the same thing and didn't even know their counterpart teams existed (including mine).

    Advice to Management

Give people more time, less meetings. Embrace new ideas, and don't kill projects in the name of pleasing shareholders. So many changes in direction was wasteful, and Yahoo! paid a high price for that. It seems like things are much better now, under Mayer, but while I was there, there were to many bosses, not enough workers, and too much power struggle and politics. It really overshadowed the reasons I wanted to be there.

    I worked at Yahoo full-time

    Pros

Smart people, difficult problems. Excellent compensation and benefits.

    Cons

Work life balance! Under Marissa leadership has started to demand insane work hours on the theory that Yahoo is fighting for its life. Also, as a former manager at yahoo, I can say that QPR (stack ranking) is completely arbitrary. Managers give their rankings and VPs can override them on a whim in calibration. The only way to get high ratings is to be "visible" to senior management. Which means self promotion is more valuable than your actual contribution.

    Advice to Management

QPR is destroying the culture, work life balance helps you retain people.
