Management is Horrendous
Jun 24, 2011 - Customer Care - Training in Hillsboro, ORRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Fast pace, cool industry, lots of potential, some great co-workers with tons of potential.
Cons
Highly political environment where the managers' main goals are to protect themselves rather than produce good work and do what is good for the company. Managers have little to no knowledge about their own industry believing Yahoo is different than the rest of the world. Product decisions leave me wondering if senior mgmt even use the internet! A few workplace bullies make life miserable for all. It was common to be thrown under the bus for doing good work.

Yahoo! Good place to work in, but management needs improvement!!
Jun 12, 2008 - Technical Lead QA in BengaluruRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
The work environment is the best and good for innovation and work. Work environment is kept open and the management takes are of being open and of a joyful nature. The career oppurtunity in Yahoo! is tremendous, if we look at th way we are growing in certain areas. This develops a good environment, as personal growth is also given time for the individual. Compensation and perks are also great, we have facilities like pick and drop from the home and also a work from home culture, which lets us do our personal work, if required. Recognition in the form of awards is also a good way to check the progress of the person. Top management recognizes you for good work done, when it does proliferate up from the leads and the manager.
Cons
Communication between the teams and a rising insecurity within the members of what will happen. The environment induces a feeling of well being and gives us time to innovate and relax, the only problem being that due to the realse cycles being too short and not enough staff trained to keep up with the same, it tends to become a place where the innovation is stifled. Only some whose projects are not active make the innovation. While the rest of the people are given away to obscurity. This is a practise which makes the people feel that they are not actually working on what they wish to and make them dull. Instead of being productive, they start to become unproductive in the short run itself. Awards have started getting too politically motivated and go to those who know how to market themselves and not to the exact deserving candidates. Due to the influx required to fill places, we have started lowering the standards at which we choose candidates. This should not be done anytime, as it will start getting more undeserving candidates, who are more interested in the perks rather than the work.

Yahoo does not demonstrate its stated values of integrity, honesty, trust and transparency,
Mar 11, 2015 - Anonymous Employee in Sunnyvale, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Smart, intelligent employees with lots of energy. Great work environment and tools and Homepage and ergo equipment. Free food and entertainment, and shuttle service. CEO conducts weekly global employee meeting updates
Cons
Yahoo's Employee Performance Process (QPR) was not designed to support Yahoo's core values, employee's success or development needs. The QPR process encourages a negative and unhealthy competitiveness which does not support team collaboration, healthy exchanges of ideas or trust among peers and management. Employee feedback should go directly to the employee and copied to the manager. There have been managers who have refused to provide the feedback to the employees. This is in direct conflict with the transparency guidance stated to Yahoo's employees. Open space work environment at Yahoo was to encourage employees to collaborate. Unfortunately, this has it's drawbacks because open doesn't always encourage collaboration. It does create an environment where people use their headsets more and will seek out a conference room because it can be distracting and difficult for some to concentrate to get their work completed.

High hopes, disappointing internship experience
Jan 11, 2015 - Anonymous InternRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Fantastic employee culture! Most people here are happy to be here. They should be. The work environment is relaxed and fun. The managers are rarely overbearing or negative. The company seems to genuinely care about the positive work experience enjoyed by its employees.
Cons
1. I was assigned to a project that management knew I would dislike. Several managers, including the one who assigned the project, made it quite clear that they felt sorry for the two interns who got "stuck" with this project. It "just needed to be done" and the interns were considered cheap temporary labor. Even though we were both graduate students, the project was nearly all repetitive and not developmental at all. It involved very little interaction with any Yahoo employees, so any time we spent interacting with employees detracted from our job. 2. Throughout the summer, it was made very clear that the interns graduating the following year (including me) would receive offers. We were encouraged (though not helped) to meet with managers throughout the department to find roles that we would like to work in when we were brought on full time. We were put through a series of interviews late in the summer to identify good fits with different divisions in the department. Then on the very last day of the internship, we were informed that the recruiting budget would be used for "experienced hires" instead of "campus hires" this year, so the interns would not receive offers. 3. They say the are the world's largest startup, and they act like it. Processes change weekly. They are missing many of the basic things expected of large established companies, like job descriptions and basic information on how the business works. People work on their own projects with no regard for how they affect processes and work in other offices or departments. Managers spend no time coordinating across projects because they are all expected to work on projects themselves.

A good company to work for. Too many low-performing execs/managers though...
Jul 4, 2009 -RecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
-- A nice and friendly work environment -- Good benefits and other facilities -- Reasonable pay -- Excellent learning opportunities and lots of cool technology
Cons
-- Many in management are pretty clueless. -- There is an overall lack of accountability. -- Lots of politics and favoritism, especially in the middle management layers. -- There seems to be an overall lack of strategy in many areas; decision making is often not quick and clear.
