I worked at Yakima, WA full-time (More than a year)
As typical with government jobs, the salary and benefits, including medical and retirement, are good.
Typical of government jobs there are those with the 'government employee mentality', "I've gottenthrough my probation period, so no one can fire me" attitude. Not all but many seem to work (or not) with this mindset. If you can put the blinders on and do your job it's a great place to work.
Low work loads, flexible time to get things done and little accountability.
The City seems only concerned with meeting the needs of its City Council, which is more incompetent than I care to discuss.
Advice to Management
Hire qualified people, not just grandfathered in candidates.
Your feedback has been sent to the team and we'll look into it.
