I have been working at Yale University as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

This is not a place that pushes hard; people are very laid-back compared with financial or New York companies

    Cons

Engagements and projects are rarely as advertised. Come prepared to be surprised. While there may be full time job offerings, the salaries are not competitive

    Advice to Management

Be much more forthcoming about the limitations on billable hours and the days that the organization is "closed" for the winter break.

I have been working at Yale University part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Yale University has great people and provides an environment for growth and success. I think that overall people enjoy working here.

    Cons

Not always the most rigorous or interesting work -- can get a bit monotonous. Also need to find a way to diversify the work environment as well.

    Advice to Management

Continue to find ways to diversify our employees and the substance of our work. There is always room for improvement and right now, that can come from diversification.

I have been working at Yale University as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

It's Yale, and has a prestigious reputation

    Cons

Not the job advertised. I'm under utilized.

    Advice to Management

Get some of your business school grads in to create processes.

I have been working at Yale University (More than a year)

    Pros

Excellent benefits, great library system, competitive salary

    Cons

Little administrative support in case of department issues, decentralized program requirements lead to inconsistencies

I worked at Yale University full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    + Prestige
    + Salary
    + Benefits
+ The paychecks do not bounce
    + Generous time off
+ Culture of hard work, excellence.
    + Good for high achievers

    Cons

    - Can get canned for no reason or justification
    - They love to hide behind "at-will" employment.
    - No real tuition reimbursement plan
    - Little/no job security for staff - a "reorg" or "funding issues" can come up anyday. This happens more than senior management admits.
    - Bosses are too afraid to stand up to higher-ups

    Advice to Management

Don't micromanage and obey state law. Just because you are prestigious and rich doesn't mean you can dump all over the staff/employees. No links permitted on Glassdoor.com but look up "Yale" "employee" "lawsuit" on your favorite search engine. Get informed!

    Positive Outlook
    Disapproves of CEO

    Pros

Alright to do a short postdoc but one has to be careful to look out for the nex job and utilize the career improvement programs from the start.

    Cons

No mentoring provided and difficult work life balance in a funding environment that is very scarce.

  10. "Limited advancement for Clerical and Technical employees"

I have been working at Yale University full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Benefits are great, and salary is fairly good.

    Cons

Limited to no advancement for Clerical and Technical employees. Yale would rather hire from outside sources than develop and advance anyone from a C&T position. Once a "senior administrative assistant" you are stuck there for life.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to stop fearing the union and take care of the employees who actually do the work and show up everyday. Management seems to just "throw their arms up in the air" and say they can't do anything about certain employees because they are protected by the union.
