I worked at Yale University full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Compared to average teaching assistant positions at graduate school, the pay and benefits are very good.

    Cons

University takes little consideration of individual circumstances and needs. Recent layoffs across the university means higher level managers have no idea what is going on at the department level.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the needs of individuals, not every one is in the same boat, and needs of teachers and students differ department to department. Take more interest in where graduates end up after funding sources dry up.

I worked at Yale University full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great Salary , Benefits and Positive Growth

    Cons

Lack of consistency with new concepts and Innovation - Constantly changes paths of ideas without completion which causes many disruptions.

    Advice to Management

There is no clear path - The upper management is in disarray, the second level of management consistently compensates for lack of direction to achieve success

I have been working at Yale University full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great facilities, famous scientists, beautiful campus, great benefits.

    Cons

Low salaries, poor opportunities for advancement/tenure, some individuals with harsh and abusive management practices and little recourse available, not very much support in career advancement outside of academia. Some professors no not care about your discoveries; some discoveries and ideas are stolen and you are not credited.

    Advice to Management

Yale should be more careful to manage the personalities of the professors they hire. Some are toxic.

    Pros

Yale has a great collaborative environment.

    Cons

Yale is very focused on protecting their endowment, across the board all departments are continually asked to cut costs.

I worked at Yale University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

You get all the resources to do your research. A lot of funding involved; lots of networking event and courses to meet people and develop a career. Great supporting offices (international students, career development). Aim at groups with startups and patents rather than number of publications.

    Cons

Too much funding. PIs are focused on getting more and more and boost their ego instead of efficiently route their resources (so many projects started and never carried on). Very little collaboration with other groups so they don't share the success. The groups with a different modus operandi get their things done and have startups and patents in their portfolio.

    Advice to Management

Keep it real and less "ivi league" looking. Give feedback to your PhD students (!!); they are there to learn.

I have been working at Yale University full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Excellent colleagues across many disciplines. Few students, but they are generally excellent. Extremely rich endowment allows Yale to do things that other school could only dream of. Gorgeous campus.

    Cons

High pressure, opaque tenure system. Still downplaying and sweeping their past misogyny and racism under the rug. Risk-averse, highly bureaucratic, money grubbing culture.
