I have been working at Yale University full-time

    Pros

The PhD experience varies wildly among different departments and advisors

I have been working at Yale University (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The pay is about a year behind the NIH fellowship. The cost of living is lower than comparable institutions. The Yale Health plan is fantastic. You can contribute to regular and Roth 403b plans, but there is no matching for post docs. There are other tax deferred benefits for dependent care, commuting, etc. ,but you will loose access to these the years that you have a fellowship. They are expanding their career services programs for postdocs and graduate students.

    Cons

If you get a fellowship you will loose access to all of your benefits other than health insurance, but this is standard at just about any institution.

Great community in a charming town. I really enjoy living in New Haven. Yale is a phenomenal place to live and learn.

    Cons

I do not like living in New England. I want to live somewhere warm so I want to move to Florida.

    Pros

I'm a student so I'm only discussing student jobs. There are very diverse positions! Some are more technical than others, but overall great choices for everyone!

    Cons

I've only worked two jobs, one as a Chinese language tutor, and the other as a research assistant for the MacMillan Center for Area Studies. So i'm not really in a position to judge!

    Advice to Management

It'd be great to create more work opportunities for students from low SES backgrounds. Some are already having a hard time adjusting to an elite institution, and the added workload is not helping much.

I have been working at Yale University part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The students are some of the smartest and most talented that I have ever met. The staff are like family. We know each other well and we support each other and help each other. It's a pleasure to come to work. The job is exactly what you would expect - you teach, you hold office hours, you grade papers, etc.

    Cons

New Haven isn't really a city in which you can raise a family. Most staff and faculty live in other towns and drive in. The homelessness rate is high, and there are a lot of muggings and petty crime incidents. The part-time contract means that you may not have guaranteed employment for more than a few months at a time, and often the job falls through at the last minute due to low student enrollment or the department giving the course to permanent faculty or graduate students.

    Advice to Management

Do a better job estimating how many lecturers you will need in the next academic year, so that you advertise exactly the number of positions that you think you will have. Offer more summer teaching opportunities.

I have been working at Yale University part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I worked with great people and really learned a lot. It was an excellent experience overall, and I would do it all over again.

    Cons

There weren't any real downsides that I can think of, but this box has a twenty word minimum so I have to put something.

    Advice to Management

No advice really, management was great and I had a great experience. This box again has a twenty word minimum.
