I worked at Yankee Candle part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

If you truly love candles and have a passion for it like I did it was a wonderful place to work. They would give free tarts and votives to use to try every time they lounged new scents, so we could gain product knowledge. You get 50% off of anything that smells in the store at all times. Sometimes they even would do more, and some off of decor items. If a customer returns a candle thats been slightly burned you are able to purchase that candle for 75% off which I did often.

    Cons

The down side if I was getting 10$ an hour as a second assistant manager, to me thats degrading. The job is easy (other than normal retail stress) but not something an adult can live on, would be perfect for college or high school student.

    Advice to Management

raise your pay for employees who are good and passionate about their jobs.

I worked at Yankee Candle part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I developed awesome connections with customers, we had regulars that came in and out a few times a month and those were the few people that make working there memorable.

    Cons

The tedious factor cannot be stressed enough. Shelves and stands need to be 100% the way it is told to be. Certain products can be a few inches turned the wrong way and management or corporate will see this as a major flaw.

I worked at Yankee Candle part-time

    Pros

When I was part of the Yankee Candle team, I felt as if I were part of a family. The product is wonderful and I felt confident about selling it to our customers. Everyday was fun, even in the middle of chaos.

    Cons

As with any retail store, sometimes the hours become a little over the top, especially during the holiday season. It would be nice if our consumer economy did not demand such long hours and stores to be open most days of the year, but that is life in the retail business.

    Advice to Management

This company always provides employee incentives to keep us interested and on our toes. These always make the day more interesting and pushes sales associates to do their best, so keep at it!

I worked at Yankee Candle full-time

    Pros

The people are the strength of this company. Amazing culture.

    Cons

The leadership team is not doing a good job at promoting internally. There is no room for growth, it is very top heavy. Way too many VPs and not enough managers.

    Advice to Management

Make sure you do all you can to retain your employees.

I have been working at Yankee Candle part-time

    Pros

The discounts are the only plus about it.

    Cons

Schedule. The higher ups. Pay. The return policy.

    Advice to Management

Care more about your employees and stand up to customer that abuse the return policy. Some higher management don't respect others and play favorites, makes it harder for others to get the recognition they deserve.

I worked at Yankee Candle full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Learn a lot about visual presentation
Always smell good, even when you go home
Definitely a good place to hone your selling skills
Full benefits package for full-time employees
50% discount off anything with a fragrance

    Cons

Company is going through some major growing pains. I don't know how much of it is from pressure from Newell Brands to be more profitable and how much of it they brought upon themselves, but they just cannot seem to make up their minds about the direction they want the business to go. HQ talks about "elevating" the brand but then they continue to cheapen the brand by offering coupons that literally gives away product. Then they run a promo for one day, decide that it's just not working, and send emails out at 3pm on a Friday telling us to flip the whole store for SAS starting Saturday morning when we thought we still had a week for prep. Or that they want the store flipped for SAS during the week of Christmas when we are already running on a skeleton crew.

And with all the worry over sales (or lack thereof) upper management isn't paying attention to field management that clearly plays favorites. When managers higher up on the scorecard receive less than favorable reviews than those lower down the list, you'd think that would trigger some kind of questioning.

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to what your field managers are doing. And decide if you want to be a luxury brand or a discount brand. You can't be both.
