  1. "Fundraising Clerk"

Former Employee - Fundraising Clerk in Wilbraham, MA

I worked at Yankee Candle part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The Yankee Candle has an employee-friendly work environment, especially within its fundraising department. Each worker feels like they are an important part of the fundraising process and the managers are generally friendly and helpful. The option of overtime pay for up to twelve hours is also a plus.

    Cons

Some aspects of the job do tend to become repetitive and the employee may start to lose focus after spending hours validating orders on a computer screen. In addition, at the Deerfield office, there is often not adequate space (or enough computers) for the many fundraising employees to work on one task at the same time.

    Advice to Management

Perhaps creating a larger working space for fundraising employees so they do not have to borrow the desks and computers of call center workers. In addition, switching up the tasks a little more to increase concentration and productivity.

    Pros

I liked working as a line lead making candles and also my work environment.

    Cons

The employees aren't treated fairly in many ways and they care more about quantity rather than quality. And there needs to be both.

    Advice to Management

    don't have any

    Pros

Discount on candles, very thorough training program provides the tools and resources to be successful. Great place to be employed if you don't have a life outside of work.

    Cons

Everything from ethically vacant business practices
to unrealistic payroll budgets. Unreasonable expectations placed on employees. Managers are often forced to work alone for the sake of saving payroll dollars. Salaries and benefits are below industry standards for the volume and type of work expected.

    Advice to Management

Looks like corporate greed has gotten the best of you too over the years. Consider being more generous to your underpaid and overworked managers and employees. Better yet, all upper management should be required to work in your stores for extended periods of time ...let's see how you perform under the rigorous demands and over the top expectations.

I have been working at Yankee Candle full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great benefits for PTO and insurance. Great training ground for new retail managers to learn how to manage a store and then move on to better company.

    Cons

Employee product discount isn't any better than what customers pay with coupons. So it's not really a benefit. Pay rates for non salary are so far below par. Upper management aren't aligned. Even District managers manage with completely different guidelines from one state to the next. Phone and email requirements aren't realistic. Forcing team members to meet the goals has no balance from district to district and no quite legal. Non stop floor changes make scheduling impossible. Payroll levels and hours are so short it leaves no staff for customer service. Corporate management appear to live in a glass house and unrealistic view of store operations. Yearly review processes aren't even fair and balanced. Saying store managers must stay at 40 hrs a week with no overtime while giving an unreasonable workload of changes isn't happening. Trying to enforce no working off the clock is just another way for upper management to pick and choose their turnover. They enforce it only where they want to choose to.

    Advice to Management

Improve your pay rates, improve your HR processes and take a better look at upper management. Your management turnover is the highest I have ever seen with a company.

    Pros

The discounts, and people you work with. No other pros.

    Cons

In the 4+ years I've been working here, I've never seen it so bad where corporate literally has no idea what they're doing. Changing promos and floorset literally everyday during our busiest season, sometimes twice in one day. Every day you come into work, new coupons, new promos, anything to make up for the horrible sales. While not being able to move from your register bc the line is out the door, you barely have time to restock, let alone eat and they say "oh by the way don't forget to set up for semi annual sale"! Corporate has no clue what they're doing and customers, employees can see it. Customers are confused with all the coupons and promos, staff are confused. Get it together Yankee. Put some fragrance back in your candles and listen to your employees.

    Advice to Management

Work in the retail stores, see what it's really like to deal with corporate.

    Pros

Tends to be fast-paced, which can be good for some people.

    Cons

Lots of organizational changes with a lack of structure and training have led to complacency among many departments. People do not work as a group any longer.

    Advice to Management

Make all departments accountable for their actions.

I worked at Yankee Candle full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Work life balance, 40 hours a week, very consistent and stable as a company. You do receive a discount of 50% off all candles, excluding the accessories, however the coupons you get in the mail are close to the employee discount as well.
Many employees have been there for decades, however there is a reason for that. Please read the cons section for review to decide if you would be the right fit.

    Cons

I would not say these are cons, you have to decide for yourself.

If you are looking for an opportunity to have a decent pay this is a great company to work for this is a great opportunity.
The staff below you is paid sub standard as in min wage so the challenge of keeping them engaged can be hard. You do spend hours by yourself if you are in a low volume store as in 9 to 5 in the afternoon you will be by yourself, or you will close by yourself with out staff after 5 Pm. I have worked over 12 hours with out leaving the sales floor all day due to lack of coverage.
Bathroom breaks and lunch breaks are hard to do because there is few floor coverage, but is manageable. Keep in mind unless it is a holiday or weekend you are by yourself most days due to employees schedules with school.
The pay structure for employees is low so you will have to grab what you can get as far as staff. Mostly College Students and High School with limited availability, which is hard if you are trying to grow the business in your location. Also most days you are selling and stocking so the training of your staff can be a challenge, because you are working opposite shifts from them. Lack of development is a reason why some of my staff left and went to other companies.

If you are a person who has a husband who works full time, makes good money and has benefits with his company, then this is the company for you. You get some weekends off during non peak times and it is not a hard job. If you are a driven person and are not relying on another household income this may not be the right fit for you depending on your experience.
Staff complains about lack of pay and how insurance is not affordable in combination with their pay. There is a challenge keeping staff below you, Yankee Candle trains their staff really well so they are marketable to other companies.
I really enjoyed the company, I was there for a little over a year, however I needed to make more money and I wanted growth opportunities as well.

    Advice to Management

I feel that if they paid their Key Holder staff better, they would have less turnover.

    Pros

Great products. Discount on candles is up to 50% off. Can work with some amazing people. Get to try free samples of the new scents each quarter. Time and half on Sundays.

    Cons

Been here almost 5 years, been a manager for two years and still only make about minimum wage. They do not pay managers very well. Managers also work alone for hours during the summer/slow season.
