I have been working at Yankee Candle full-time for more than a year

    Pros

-Discount only applies to anything that has a scent. -A good communicated team will always be happy. -Easy stressless job. -Can experience: cashier, stock, visual, training. -Rare rude customers. -Can be ranked in a upper position, if you seem to be over qualified.

    Cons

-No discount on accessories. -A stressful job if you are in a team that lacks good communication. -low pay rate. -Will realize that not all customers have manners. -Freezing in the store if it's snowing out. -WILL get addicted to the products if not already.

    Advice to Management

If you're thinking to get this position, be prepared for all responsibilities. Must learn everythjng as quick as possible. Always stay calm...no matter what the situation is. Upper management is only stressed if there's a lack of communication. Would like to have higher pay rate please.

    Pros

Management and co-workers were great, and you got to be around candles all day! It was pretty easy to sell something I love. Good discounts on candles and sometimes got to take damaged candles home

    Cons

Low pay and not enough hours. Was difficult to meet the sales goals they set for you.

I worked at Yankee Candle full-time

    Pros

The product sells itself. Great people

    Cons

I worked her for over 4 years and stress and low pay is the main reason why I quit after so long, besides wanting to get out and do something else. Upper management expects the world with no pay. First assistant managers and store managers are expected to interview and hire their own employees with no help from DM’s or other upper management which could be extremely stressful if someone quits unexpectedly around the... holidays. Christmas is a nightmare with hundreds of boxes of shipment coming in everyday. The DM will visit and complain about every detail of the store. It is impossible to juggle every task on time, train employees, get shipment done and get a perfect secret shop score with no pay. Also in recent years the company has changed and go for low prices instead of quality

I have been working at Yankee Candle full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great discount Decent benefit structure for full time employees

    Cons

Many unrealistic goals for the retail stores Too many new stores being opened in one area severely impacts the oleer, long standing stores Pay is not enough for the goals and expectations for managers Not much room for advancement Not enough product training for new hires Hard to complete and keep up with the precise floor set and perimeter plans when stores aren't receiving enough stock or being replenished... in a timely manner Hard to keep sales reps and assistant managers due to low pay

    Advice to Management

Listen to your store and assistant managers Offer better pay to retail management positions Recognize that this generation is moving towards online sales and restructure the retail stores' goals to meet public demand Allow a little more freedom in floor sets for retail stores Coach and proceed accordingly for management positions that either should not have been management in the first place or have become... complacent and do the bare minimum Less continuous and changing sales on certain products to create better buzz and urgency to buy products. Customers have grown accustomed to knowing that certain sales will return within a month or will continue for several weeks and will wait to buy since there is no urgency or exclusive deals for certain products Create better advertisement for personalized candles and in store web orders geared towards this generation's demographics Offer monthly bonuses on conversion, ADS, and UPT to better drive business instead of offering low quarterly bonuses for managers - mangers don't feel the urgency to exceed these goals knowing they have 3 months to earn very low bonuses and will not be reprimanded for not meeting these goals Re-vamp older stores' back rooms to allow better organization and allow more room to store excess stock Please create two personalized candle stations for higher volume stores

I have been working at Yankee Candle part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great product and a good discount makes it a fun place to work. Contests to increase encourage your sales are a plus.

    Cons

Pay. The pay is not good. At all. The have high expectations but don't want to pay you to meet them, which leads to a large amount of turnover. Also, you work alone a lot, which is not cool. Insurance is high and is not offset by low pay.

    Advice to Management

Pay employees what they are worth, not just a base management salary!

I worked at Yankee Candle full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great discount on quality products. Although I was in a higher volume store for that company, it was still slow enough to give everyone time to coach and train and really learn how to sell and judge basic business metrics. I was able to really build and grow a wonderful staff and YC gives you the training tools to do so. You're also selling products that you love and that can make you happy. (For now) the candles... are made in the USA. I left before the Rubbermaid company partnered with jarden and stores became nervous and positions eliminated.

    Cons

A lot of quality control issues as of recently; many customers disgruntled on lack of quality - no action on it from corporate. Retail sales people basically take the brunt of abuse and complaints without any changes being made. Incredibly low pay for the industry, after 8 years I made $4 less than someone who came into my position after I left with less experience from the outside. District manager confused and... panicked, lacked a backbone necessary to support stores and employees on actual issues. We saw tenured employees (20+years) fired because the DM wouldn't consider going to bat for them due to her lack of confidence and desire to protect her own skin.

    Advice to Management

Realize how hard your stores work for you. Spend time in stores on the front lines and turn customer feedback into progressive action. Look at wages of other retailers and really get competitive if you want people to work hard and bring experience to improve your company and please your guests!
