Technical Account Manager

Being a woman in tech, I only recently started advocating for myself at work about advancement opportunities. Because of this I wanted to ask this question to my male counterparts. When you have 1:1's with your direct reports and talk about career growth / aspirations what is your managers’ response typically? I’d like to gauge how my experience (negative) differs from others. For instance are you met with blockades, enthusiasm, dread, etc?

Lack of growth opportunities and recognition

Dec 1, 2022 - Platform Manager in New York, NY
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

    - Incredibly supportive, intelligent, and like-minded peers. Despite the downsides listed here, the environment within the team has never felt cutthroat and every member of the team will do what they can to support and assist one another. - Flexible work environment, able to work from home if you want, but can also go to the office which is nice and there are incentives (free lunch, coffee) for those that do go to the office.

    Cons

    - Lack of growth opportunities and recognition from leadership. The organization continually fails to recognize quality performance from members of this team. - Role does not have access to commission based on customer retention and upsell. Compensation increases for this role are exclusively tied to promotions which are only available once per year and are rarely granted to more than one or two individuals each cycle. There are no non promotion-based compensation increases, either performance based or otherwise. Leadership struggles to even provide non-monetary incentives for good/great performers. This leads to a significant detachment between expectations and incentives. - This team has historically been used as a crutch for sales, CS, and support teams that struggle to even understand fundamental aspects of the products that they are meant to be selling/supporting. Leadership claims to be working to rectify this by investing in training and upleveling new and existing employees, but in the meantime, this platform manager role is still expected to solve every issue and answer every question for customers and internal team members alike. - Longstanding failure of leadership to ensure compensation equity between tenured team members and new hires. New hires start at significantly higher rates than tenured employees started at, this coupled with the lack of compensation increases leads to major dissatisfaction with the role and increased attrition. - Repetitive work, the role is essentially a support specialist role and is almost entirely based on solving customer support requests, despite how much effort leadership has taken to try to shift this. The nature of the product does not allow for much, if any, hard skill development. You are expected to solve everything with the in-house tools that are built and maintained by product and engineering teams that the platform manager is not a part of.

Stay Away… unless you desperately need work.

Nov 30, 2022 - Customer Success Manager in New York, NY
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

-Solid offices across the globe. -Flexibility to work remotely.

    Cons

-Lots of turnover of great people with zero communication about it which hits morale hard. - Seems to be a lot of career stagnation and lack of manager investment in helping everyone on their teams - A general lack of friendliness and a "we're on the same team". Plenty of instances of people projecting their stress and anxieties on others in not-so-nice ways. Lack of empathy in many parts of the culture that I've experienced - No one seems to have a good work life balance and there is a lot of poor systems that create more work overall that could be avoided with better internal communication and alignment - The culture generally just feels down when you are in smaller groups where people can be honest, and falsely positive elsewhere.

    Love working here

    Nov 29, 2022 - Associate UI Designer
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

This is my second job out of college and it is everything I want. I work with a team, receive constructive feedback, work with other teams and see my work out in the world. Managers are very understanding and encourage life work balance. It feels like a current tech company, both from how the company runs and it's employees. Hours are very flexible, you just have to attend all required meetings and work 40 hours a week (doesn't have to necessarily be 9-5). Great benefits and retirement plan. I feel valued and appreciated everyday.

    Cons

While remote work is fun, I wonder what the company was like before covid hit.

    Pros

The work culture is great, and it's the people who really make it shine. The new office is also a nice perk - prime location.

    Cons

    - Limited growth - Need for process improvement

    Pros

    - Great people within the company to work with - Good perks and benefits(free lunch at the office, snacks, health and dental insurance)

    Cons

    - Within the role lack of processes and resources - Cross-teams interactions are very limited due to the amount of work - Sometimes micro-management

    Great Place to Start

    Nov 17, 2022 - Ui\Ux Designer
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Lots of resources to learn and grow at a steady pace. Plenty of support from teammates. Good work life balance. Younger company. Pay is decent for the amount of work you need to do.

    Cons

No clear ladder of growth and pretty low skill ceiling without much opportunity to acquire new skills. Work becomes repetitive and since it's based around templates made by the team theres a heavy emphasis on R&D to "make an impact". Lots of inefficiencies that get rehashed and rehashed again over and over.

    Irresponsible leadership

    Nov 15, 2022 - RVP of Sales
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Flexible work from home policy. Free drinks and snacks at Corp offices. Top performers are paid well.

    Cons

Don't be fooled by Yext messaging. Executive leadership are skilled at constructing a positive appearance for the street. Although, once behind the curtain, you will find most team leaders (AVP and up) to be tone deaf, jaded and apathetic toward the employees, unless it is in their short term best interest. They say the right things, but have little respect for the opinions or welfare of the workers. The senior management practices favoritism on steroids. Their is an small, active group of longer term employees who are members of the "secret handshake group". They quietly support each other and are the beneficiaries of a biased culture of private messaging via Confide or open favoritism during company calls, events and benefits. This is a company that is working to boost their value through employee RIF's (3 so far in 2022) and employee compensation changes/downgrades (coming soon). The new CEO (former Chairman) openly admitted that the stock price is all that matters to him. He has boasted about not receiving a base pay and all of his compensation will come from an increase is the stock price. As an employee, run before you are the next beneficiary of his draconian cuts to make the bottom line appear positive in an effort to drive up the stock price so he receives his payday.
